My dream had always been to go to the village. The cabin where I lived with the alpha was the furthest from all in the village, he justified it to my mother at the time saying it was for safety; a large lagoon with cascading waterfalls. It was a good place that hid our scent, the winds were something rarely seen, and the endless winter season that pounded our area helped us to go unnoticed, no one would think that someone lived here. The trees rose with power and elegance, while they had the view of an incredibly intimidating aura.
We lived in the south, a part of the village that was almost buried in snow, due to the ruggedness and aggressiveness of the climate, they had to move north many years ago, even before my birth. That wooden cabin was the only thing left of the old village, and I loved it. I felt free there, when the alpha went to fulfill his long missions were the happiest and calmest days I could have, it was extremely forbidden for me to visit the village without his company, but I would go in secret when he was not there; I was never caught in the act.
For those days, I was completely alone, my mother had dementia and fled from the alpha's side, at some point she began to detest how he treated her, I asked her to stay, but now I understand her reasons. Alpha was someone dominant and inflexible, he always loved to have control over everything that happened and everything, absolutely everything, had to be in its place. The ceramic plates lined up from small to large, the spoons on top of each other, no water on the wood, his clothes clean, no bad smells on the bed or sheets, every day he had to do impeccable cleaning; I was fine like that. I felt like an adventurer, I almost never felt sad, I liked to learn. At 9 years old, when mom was still there, I read several books that Alpha kept with great care, they were, apparently, secrets... But there was nothing that I didn't notice in that house after taking care of it so much, that secret opening was easy to open without forcing it, they were magic books.
I had never been attracted to that art, my mother was a sorceress and I remembered how some people came to consult her personal things, Alpha sponsored this, although I knew my mother didn't like it. The following days I dedicated myself to transcribing those complete notes and pages, it had become a hobby and I started to apply it even when she left, so 8 years passed.
Alpha never knew what I was doing, I didn't know his reaction so I avoided letting him know about my mastery of magical arts, I felt free when I used them, something I rarely did. My second hobby was watching Alpha train in the waterfall, he was very manly, with his hard and emotionless face, he always kept the same expression, even if something hurt him. He was one of the best warriors our village had, it was prosperous times, the war seemed to be diminishing due to existing alliances, but he never stopped training with different weapons under that waterfall. I fell in love with his movements, I wanted to do it too. I copied his movements in my mind and when he went to serve the alpha of the pack, I started training.
My body was not very strong, but I was agile. I could run long distances on the snow for a long time without running out of breath, I had that taste for combat when I was 11. He didn't know I could do something like that either.
It was the best.
I returned to the earth and rubbed forcefully the dirty clothes on the table with the stone in my hand, which were red from the cold water. That waterfall led to a stream where I used to wash clothes every time I had to, when I finished I returned to the cabin and hung, on a straw cord made by me, the freshly washed clothes. I returned to the outskirts, chopped some logs with the axe and lit the fire, even during the day, I left the clothes nearby so they wouldn't get toasted with the cold outside; those were alpha's demands. From there, I cleaned the wooden floor and walls with an old cloth and water from the stream, it took about two hours in the process, but I felt satisfied afterwards, everything looked impeccable.
I hurried to take the last books of magic and martial arts that I had stolen from the library, I was learning new things. Now it was me who had made a secret compartment under the bed I shared with the alpha, he would never find out. My day ended with a single meal, fish and some fruits that I collected during the course of my day. I slept like a baby curled up in clean sheets. I didn't feel like I was living badly, despite almost always being alone, I would be eternally grateful if alpha died in battle. I didn't want to leave him because I knew he was also disturbed, like mom, I didn't like it and I never agreed with what he made of me when she left, yet I still remembered that loving man who took care of me. I hoped he would soon find the peace he was seeking, in some confrontation against rebels or rivals.
It was something I could say without remorse, I loved my father very much. As alpha, I detested him. But I had learned a lot from him, I would know how to defend myself if the case arose and I had to fend for myself. I had a whole plan for when he didn't come back for more than 6 months, because he had told me one night when he had satisfied his carnal desires that, if something like that happened, I should go far away. So I would. By the Goddess, yes.
The night had come, I was already about to sleep and some muffled steps in the snow sounded outside. His smell was incredibly strong, I knew alpha had returned.
