Chapter 4: New Dawn

1106 Words
The sun was out, casting down rays that penetrated through the rolls of smoke above the blackened and burnt remains of the Thorne mansion. The choked-up air smelt of a huge heap of burning wood and structures, destruction emitting noxious fumes, but at least upon this desolate scene, there reigned a semblance of a note for quiet determination. Elise looked on at the debris with a heavy heart but was lighted by her new-found resolution. She then turned to Ethan, who hadn't left her side through the whole ordeal that evening. His eyes, much like hers, were tired and almost empty in feeling what she felt, yet at the same time with a mix of hope. Their eyes burned with determination that exclaimed they would come out much stronger and more united than ever. "Can't let them get away with this, Elise," he concluded, his face grave. "We've got to keep on fighting, for your parents, Charles, and us." She nodded, "We will. We'll find a way to make them pay, however first, we'll have to regroup, take stock, and sort things out, then decide our next move." The embers of the mansion held an eerie vision of horror, yet upon its ashes, they had managed a way forward into the future. They now proceeded to a far-off cottage Charles had mentioned, a place where they would lie low, think, and strategize on the course of action to take next. The drive to the cottage was very serene and could be dubbed the complete opposite of the one they were coming from. That little cottage, nestled up in the hills, full of wildflowers and big giant trees so green, untouched by the darkness that had sought to steal them to its lonely shadows, felt now to be a welcome sigh of relief from all their turmoil. As they got out of the car, leaves rustled, and birds began to chirp in symphony to melodize peace. Elise took a deep breath, and her heart finally seemed to rest peacefully, relieving the pressure that had been so thick for the last couple of days. Ethan opened the door to the cottage, and it was warm and friendly inside. The fireplace crackled away, drawing them closer with its warmth and smell of fresh pine, so sensuous. She felt some calm that she had not known in what felt like forever. They unpacked and set up the cottage most of the day. By sundown, Ethan suggested a short walk in the woods, and Elise was more than ready. They strolled easily side by side through the greenery with lulling sounds of nature, appeasing the spirit. For the first time, Elise was grounded enough to reclaim her piece. They walked into a small clearing, and he held his hand out toward her. She felt his palm; it was so warm and comforting. "We have seen too much, Elise, and I am thinking perhaps out of this darkness we might be able to find a way to move forward together." She looked deep into his eyes, and there she found his understanding and compassionate soul alive and vivid this was the man she had fallen in love with. "Thank you, Ethan; I would never have survived all this without you." They stood there in each other's embrace, so close to gathering some warmth that had been born out of the ashes over which they had overcome. The world outside appeared to ooze away and melt into a resolution made by two souls that were joined together in unity of purpose. They returned to the cottage long after dark and sat in front of the fire. The flames seemed to chat away to themselves, warming the room, emanating heat that somehow seemed comfortable and safe. Peace enveloped the two of them like fresh air, much needed after the days of pure pouring chaos. They shared stories, sweet memories, and whispered reassurances to each other. Through these stories of Elise and her parents, so full of love, their longing, and a deep desire to chase love above anything, the two souls were connected more profoundly than they had ever imagined. They had a healthy relationship, and in the process, finally built up the pillars of trust and respect. She leaned forward, the flames dancing, and said thoughtfully, "We have to figure it all out…but we can't do it just the two of us. We need allies who have at their command all we need in the way of resources and backup." Ethan nodded his face supportive. "Yes, we have to reach out to people we trust. They will help in bringing out the truth and bringing these criminals to book." The rest of the evening they spent in preparation and planning, trying to figure out what lay next and whom they could approach for ideas. For there was a kind of clarity that seemed to emerge then, amidst the now barren fog of the immediate past confusion, they had something to follow. No longer helpless victims, but a team bent on fighting back to take what was rightfully theirs, to do something worthy of the death of their loved ones. The brightest morning, they had ever known dawned, for certain heralding a new beginning to their existence. It inspired fresh hopes; the sorrow was lightened by all the promises of the future. They had their mission in life and were ready to follow it to the letter. After breakfast, they packed up and left the cottage, aware that it was going to be a long day with a hard ride ahead. The rest in the cottage had helped them in making resolutions that filled their hearts with a new surge of optimism. "We have this," Elise said. "We're gonna meet whatever tomorrow brings our way, together." Ethan smiled warmly in his eyes. "Yes, together.". Then they rode off, the sun still climbing from the East, shining after them, then full in their faces, all radiant. It was a new day: new beginnings. Nothing could get in their way now as they traveled hand in hand, and nothing could stop them from being in love with fearless hearts. The past had been some sort of wild rave that had glued on them strength and the will to move on. The future was an invitation for healing and hope like a vow to embrace love, which would guide them on. Now they had meaning; life's journey began, at its nascent stage. Dark shadows of the past started to blur; and ahead of them was a bright future, beckoning with the energy of love and new beginnings.
