Grumpy Alpha

1070 Words
Hundreds of pairs of eyes—most of them wild and glowing—are staring at me. Alpha Ethan’s jaw is clenched so tightly I’m convinced his teeth are seconds away from shattering. I don’t stick around to find out what happens next. Before anyone can react, I gather the ridiculous layers of heavy white lace, spin on my heel, and run. “Aria?!” Lily’s horrified scream echoes behind me, but I couldn’t care less. I sprint down the red carpet like the devil himself is chasing me—which, honestly, isn’t too far from the truth. The dress nearly trips me several times, but adrenaline keeps me moving. I shove open the cathedral’s massive wooden doors and bolt outside, desperate to find an escape route. The moment I step outside, however, I freeze. My jaw nearly hits the ground. This isn’t my city. There are no concrete buildings, no smog, no honking taxis. Instead, an enormous ancient forest stretches as far as the eye can see, surrounding a vast stone courtyard that looks like something straight out of a medieval fantasy movie. The air smells impossibly fresh—pine and rain. It’s breathtaking. And completely unfamiliar. Yet somehow, I recognize it immediately. Leaning against one of the stone pillars, I struggle to catch my breath as the details of the plot flood back into my mind. God, I’ve reread this novel so many times on my phone. During the first half of the story, Aria is treated like garbage. Everyone humiliates her because she’s supposedly an ordinary Beta with no real power in a pack of elite warriors. Ethan—the i***t—openly cheats on her with Camille, the platinum-blonde hypocrite sitting in the front row who pretends to be her “best friend.” Aria spends hundreds of chapters crying in corners and begging for scraps of affection. But then I remember the biggest plot twist of the entire novel. The Awakening. Halfway through the story, during an enemy attack that nearly destroys the pack, Aria experiences a traumatic event that unlocks her true nature. She was never a Beta at all. She’s the descendant of a sacred bloodline, and her Awakening transforms her into the strongest, fastest, and most destructive she-wolf to appear in centuries—even stronger than the Supreme Alpha himself. And what did the original Aria do with all that power? Absolutely nothing useful. She gave it up to save Ethan, forgave every humiliation he put her through, got pregnant, and died tragically while giving birth at the end of the novel. Yeah, absolutely not. There is no way in hell I’m wasting that kind of power. If I already know I’m guaranteed to awaken halfway through the story—and on top of that, Aria’s family is ridiculously wealthy—then I’ve basically won this game before it’s even started. All I have to do is survive the first half of the plot, refuse to let anyone walk all over me, claim my overpowered wolf abilities, and live the good life. Goodbye, eight-hour workdays. Goodbye, instant noodles. This is my golden ticket. “Where do you think you’re going?” A deep, commanding voice rumbles behind me, sending chills down my spine. I slowly turn around. There he is. Ethan. Under the sunlight, he’s somehow even more intimidating. He’s so tall that his shadow completely blocks the light. Before I can take a step back, his large hand grabs my face, forcing me to look up at him. His grip is firm—almost painful—and his warm breath brushes against my cheeks. “Stop humiliating me in front of my pack and get back inside,” he growls, his golden eyes flashing dangerously. “I never wanted to marry a pathetic Beta either, but we’re both stuck with this arrangement. So stop acting like a spoiled child.” The pain in my jaw is real. The warmth of his hand is real. The scent of pine and mint clinging to him is far too real. This definitely isn’t a dream. This is my new reality. “Let go of me, you oversized mutt!” I yell, smacking his arm. I try to pull away and make another run for it, but Ethan lets out a contemptuous snort. In one swift, effortless movement, he grabs me by the waist, hoists me into the air, and throws me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. “Hey! Put me down! Put me down right now, you filthy flea-ridden dog!” I scream, kicking wildly and pounding my fists against his rock-solid back. “I’ll call animal control! Let me go!” “Quiet, Aria,” he says flatly, completely ignoring my insults as he pushes open the cathedral doors and carries me back inside. The moment we reenter, whispers ripple through the crowd at the thoroughly undignified sight. Without slowing his stride, Ethan walks down the aisle and finally sets me back on my feet near the altar, right beside the front pews. That’s when I notice an elegantly dressed group staring at me with equal parts concern and embarrassment. My parents. Aria’s billionaire parents. I look at them and smile inwardly. Oh, I’m definitely going to play my cards right in this world. I’m not going to be the tragic heroine of this story. I’m going to be the queen who walks away with all the money and all the power. Ethan leans down until his lips are close enough to brush against my ear as he whispers coldly, “You’ll become the most important Beta in the history of this pack. Stop acting insane and let’s get this over with.” Before I can answer with something appropriately offensive, a delicate hand gently touches my arm. “Aria, my goodness, are you alright?” Camille asks in a voice so sweet and fake it makes me want to throw up. Her eyes immediately dart toward Ethan, searching for his reaction. What a hypocrite, I think as I stare at her. In the novel, Aria was far too naïve to realize that her so-called best friend had already been sleeping with her fiancé. But I’m not Aria. I’ve always loved stories where the villains get exactly what they deserve. And now? I have the power to make sure they do. And I’m going to enjoy every second of it.
