# (Caroline's POV) I didn't sleep. I lay on my side in the dark of the Lowells guest suite with one hand pressed flat against my stomach, running through the geometry of the crash over and over. The angle of the impact. The jolt of the seatbelt across my chest. The way my head had snapped back against the leather. The doctor at the estate had examined me the night before and sworn I was fine. Bruising on the sternum, minor whiplash. *The baby is shielded by more than you think, Ms. Lowells. Your body did its job.* I believed him in my head. My body didn't. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the jolt again. At four in the morning I gave up pretending.
