Chapter 15

~ ROWAN’S POV ~ The silver sickness was finally gone, but I felt weird. My body was buzzing. It was like I had too much caffeine or a shot of adrenaline that wouldn't wear off. Julian and Marcus had been gone for an hour, looking like they’d seen a ghost after what happened in that bed. They didn't want to talk about it, but I knew I’d done something to them. I’d tapped into their power, and I felt stronger than I ever had. I couldn't stay in that room. It felt like the walls were closing in on me. I threw on a shirt and some leggings and grabbed the sheets. The servants were ignoring me because of the lies Sabrina was spreading, so if I wanted clean bedding, I had to do it myself. I headed down to the basement laundry room. The air was cold, but as I got closer, I smelled that annoying, expensive perfume. Sabrina. She was leaning against one of the big washers, looking like she’d been waiting for a fight. Her hair was perfect, and her silk dress probably cost more than my life. "Look at the little thief," Sabrina said. She sounded like she was trying to be mean but also fake-nice. It was annoying. I didn't say a word. I walked right past her and started stuffing the sheets into an empty machine. "Are you deaf or just a w***e?" she snapped. She kicked my laundry basket, and a pillowcase hit the floor. "I’m talking to you, Rowan." I stood up and looked her in the eye. I didn't let my face show anything. "I’m busy, Sabrina. Move." "Oh, you're busy? Doing what? f*****g my Julian and his brother?" She laughed, and it sounded like glass breaking. "You think you're special? You’re an incubator. That’s it." "If I'm just an incubator, why are you down here hiding in the laundry room to talk to me?" I asked. I turned back and started pouring the soap in. Sabrina’s face went red. She pulled a heavy gold ring out of her pocket. It had a huge red stone and the Knox family crest on it. "Do you know what this is?" she hissed. "A ring. Good job," I said. "It’s a Knox heirloom. It went missing this morning." She stepped closer, looking way too happy. "And guess what? I just found it in your laundry." She tossed the ring into my basket. It made a loud clatter. "I didn't touch that ring," I said. My voice was low. I felt that stubborn fire starting to burn in my chest. "You put it there." "It doesn't matter," Sabrina smirked. She got so close I could smell her minty breath. "When Julian finds this, he’ll throw you in the dungeon. He might be sleeping with you now, but he won't let a thief carry his kid." "You're desperate," I told her. I didn't move an inch. "You're scared because they’re actually looking at me, and you’re just the girl they call when they have nothing better to do." Sabrina swung her hand to slap me, but I caught her wrist. My grip was tight. Real tight. Something surged through my arm and into her, and she winced, trying to pull away. "Let go of me, you b***h!" she yelled. "Make me," I said. She jerked her arm back and laughed, though she looked a little shaken. "You think you’re tough? Let’s talk about what happens after you have that baby. Do you think they’ll keep you? A traitor?" I just watched her. "Once that baby is born, you’re done," Sabrina said, her voice getting louder. "Julian told me. He said you’re just a tool. Once the heir is here, he’s going to have you executed. You’re a dead woman. You’re just a walking womb he’s going to throw away like trash." That hurt. I won't lie. But I didn't let her see it. The heat in my blood was getting hotter. My wolf was growling in my head. "Is that why you’re so mad?" I asked. "Because even a 'dead woman' gets more attention than you?" "You b***h!" Sabrina screamed. She lunged at me. She tried to hit my face, but I was too fast. I ducked and shoved her back. She hit the metal folding table hard and looked shocked. "Don't touch me again," I warned. "I’ll kill you!" Sabrina grabbed a big bottle of bleach and swung it at my head. I didn't even think. I blocked her arm and punched her right in the jaw. It was a solid hit. I felt the bone under my knuckles. The bleach bottle fell and shattered on the floor, splashing everywhere. She fell to her knees, holding her face. Blood was leaking through her fingers. I wasn't done. I felt that weird power from earlier rushing through me. I grabbed the front of her dress and hauled her up. I slammed her against the wall and put my hand around her throat. I didn't squeeze hard enough to kill her, but I made sure she knew I could. "I’m not a thief," I hissed. I was right in her face. "And I’m not your victim. If you ever mention the dungeon or my execution again, I will kill you myself. Do you understand?" Sabrina clawed at my hand, her face turning purple. She was terrified. I could see it in her eyes. She tried to shift, but she couldn't. It was like my presence was holding her wolf back. She started making a pathetic whimpering noise. "You're pathetic," I said. I let her go, and she slumped to the floor, coughing and gasping. I looked at the ring in the basket. I picked it up. It was cold. "You want to frame me?" I whispered. I grabbed her hand and forced the ring onto her finger. I shoved it hard until it was stuck past her knuckle. "There," I said. "Now you’re the thief." Sabrina looked up at me, her lip shaking. "They'll believe me. They love me." "Then go tell them," I said, picking up my laundry. "Go tell them how the 'weak breeder' just beat your ass." I turned around and walked out. I didn't look back, even when she started crying. My heart was racing, but for the first time, I didn't feel like a prisoner. I felt like I had the upper hand.
