She was sitting frozen at the dining table after Dr Wadhwa left when her two friends dropped in, full of concern.
‘What Dr Wadhwa said about Mallika?’ Madhu asked, sitting opposite her.
‘Tests results, they have come?’ Anu asked, sitting next to her.
‘No, the test results haven’t come,’ she said.
‘But what is wrong with Mallika?’ Madhu asked.
Her mother’s instinct must have kicked in. ‘She has fever and cough.’
Later, she would know what a prescient lie this was.

This would prevent her friends from going upstairs to check on Mallika.
