Returning To The Night Life

Three and a half weeks had come and gone and Abhimanyu made sure to have Maverick in an office as soon as possible. Abhu started Mav off with a small job on his first day-or at least what Abhu considered small when Mav, in fact, saw it to be a little more….intricate than maybe was given credit for. And by the time Maverick was finished, it was even more so. Needless to say, Abhu was so impressed and proud of the way that Maverick handled it, he decided to give him the larger projects right away. Already, Maverick had over twelve clients within the first week and was ready for a break. He leaned back in his office chair and looked around. The office was plain-nothing special and actually needed some work. Usually, every inch of his father’s company was already designed with sharp and chic looks, however, Abhu somehow got the idea to allow Maverick to fix up his office the way that he saw fit. Maverick knew that it was his mother’s idea. “See you haven’t started on your office yet, son.  His father’s voice took him out of his thoughts. He turned his gaze to his father, a small smile on his face as he chuckled. “Haven’t had much time, dad.” He said. “What with all the clients you’ve given me.” Abhu came into the office and sat on the corner of his son’s desk. “Ironically enough I haven’t given you anything.” He chuckled. Maverick turned around and curiously looked at his father. “What do you mean?” Abhu, with the largest smile on his face, replied. “Believe it or not Mav, these clients are clients that have requested you.” “What?” Maverick sat up in his chair, his attention suddenly full on his father and what he had to say.  “Wha-how?” “Your design on the Baskins case was so good that I decided to show it to the vice president of marketing. They agreed that this would be a good addition to promoting the business. As well as promoting my son’s return to the company.” There was such pride in his voice that Maverick simply smiled but he didn’t say anything. He just allowed his father to have this moment. “Mav, you have no idea how proud I am of you. You’ve made such a big difference in business in just the two weeks that you’ve been here! You’ve just got such a gift for this business and-” He cut off his words and smirked, suddenly seeming sheepish. “I said all that to say…” He stood from his seat. “I’m glad you’re here.” He then walked to Maverick’s office door. “And well, since you’re already building up a clientele, I think it’s about time to hire you an assistant.” Maverick leaned back in his chair again, his arms behind his head. “Not sure that having an assistant would be the best idea, dad. You know I work better alone.”  “Nonsense, son.” Abhimanyu countered. “Logically speaking, you need an assistant to keep things from getting too crazy. I consider it mandatory.” “Dad, I’m not good with people and I just don’t think-” “You’ll be fine, Maverick.” Abhimanyu interceded. “Have faith.” He said. “Your mother has been searching through possibilities and-” “Aw dad, mom? Really? He rolled his eyes. “She’s probably going to be hiring based off of potential wives rather than potential help.” “Give her some credit son.” Abhu smirked. “It’ll be fine. See you later.” He then left his office. Maverick was suddenly more stressed than before. He never considered the idea that he would need an assistant. He liked being alone-liked working alone and now he had to deal with an assistant. He had to entertain? As he allowed the notion to send him into a dark place, his cell phone began to ring. He pulled it from his pocket. “Hey man.” He said. “Yeah, everything’s actually going pretty good. So far.” He replied to his best friend. He sighed. “It’s going good-doesn’t mean I don’t need a drink.” He added. “Besides, my bonus just kicked in today.” Maverick smirked. “Drinks on me.” It was around six o’clock that night and as time drew near for Maverick to meet with his best friend, he noticed his anxiety spiking. He had only gotten back in touch with Stefano in recent weeks since his return home. He hadn’t seen him in as long as the fifteen years that he served in the navy and hadn’t spoken to him in even longer. This was ironic, considering Stefano was the one who taught him all about cars and sparked his interest in them in the first place. This was the only reason that his once close friend could even convince him to go out in a crowd. In truth he missed his friendship with Stef. Part of him was excited but another smaller part of him was anxious about what he’d run into while out and around civilians. He shifted the buttons on his shirt to assure that they laid perfectly down the middle of his chest. He left his collar and one button open to slightly reveal a scar leading from his neck down a way to a tattoo that was covered by his shirt. He ran his hands through his tapered cut, his hair slightly long on the top. All in all, he felt comfortable at least. Though, he would have definitely preferred his gray sweatpants, tank top and a car to work on. He took a deep breath and took some medication for the anxiety that was flaring up, then heard his phone ringing in the other room. He already knew who it was. “Yeah?” He answered when he got to his phone. “Yeah, I’m on my way.”
