Episode 2: A Taste Of Forever

703 Words
"You belong to me now." Aria would replay those five words for the rest of her life — but in that moment, standing alone with the King in an empty hall, all she could do was stare at him and try to remember how to breathe. It had happened so fast. One drop of blood. One look. Forty nobles gone in seconds, and now it was just the two of them, and a silence so heavy it felt like something she could reach out and touch. --- The doors had closed behind the last of the nobles only moments before, the sound echoing through the empty hall like something final. Aria stood frozen by the table, the small cut on her finger still stinging, still bleeding just a little. Her heart was beating so hard she thought the King must be able to hear it. He hadn't moved from where he'd risen. He just stood there, watching her, with a stillness that felt more dangerous than any shout or threat could have been. "Name," he said. "A-Aria." Her voice came out smaller than she meant it to. "Aria Voss, Your Majesty." Something shifted in his face. Not quite a smile. More like recognition — the look of a man hearing a word he'd been waiting a long time to hear. "Aria." He said it slowly, like he was testing the weight of it. "Do you know why this room is empty right now?" She shook her head. Her voice had left her again. "Because in five hundred years," he said, stepping down from the dais, his footsteps making no sound at all against the stone floor, "no drop of blood has ever done that." "Done what?" The words slipped out before she could stop them. He was closer now. Close enough that she could see the strange detail in his eyes — not just red, but layered, like garnet held up to firelight. Close enough that the cold coming off him wasn't just cold. It felt older than that. Deeper. "Every vampire in this court can smell blood," he said. "We live surrounded by it every day. It means nothing to us — it's like breathing means nothing to you. Background noise." His eyes dropped to the cut on her finger, and for just a second something raw crossed his face before he pulled it back under control. "Yours is not background noise." He reached out and took her hand. Not fast. Not rough. But there was no version of this moment where she could have pulled away, and they both seemed to know it. He lifted her hand between them, turning it slightly so the small cut caught the candlelight. "May I?" he asked. It was, strangely, the first time anyone in this entire palace had asked her permission to do anything. Aria didn't answer. She couldn't. But she didn't pull her hand back either, and he seemed to take that as answer enough. He lowered his head, and his lips brushed against the cut on her finger — not a bite, not yet, just the faintest taste of it. The change in him was immediate. His whole body went rigid. His eyes flared brighter, the red deepening into something closer to fire, and a low sound rose in his chest that didn't sound human at all. Then he let go of her hand and stepped back, fast, like he'd touched something too hot to hold. "Guards." His voice had changed completely — sharp, commanding, all the softness gone. Two vampires appeared at the door within seconds, like they'd been standing just outside waiting for exactly this. "This girl does not leave the palace," the King said. "She is reassigned. Starting tonight, she serves no one but me." "Your Majesty—" one of the guards started. "That was not a request." He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. "Move her things to the west tower tonight. Post a guard outside her door. If anyone in this court so much as looks at her the wrong way, I want their name before sunrise." The guards bowed and left without another word. Aria finally found her voice. "What's happening to me?"
