Chapter 7 Chapter Seven

Richard didn't even flinch at her words. "Like I said—just give me the money. Hand it over, and I swear I won't lay a finger on her." Amelia's lips quivered with frustration. "I seriously don't have it. Every cent I had went to pay the hospital bills." "Then let her die. Once she's gone, those bills will get refunded anyway." "Richard!" she shouted, her voice full of fury. Then, it softened into a pleading tone. "Dad, she's been by your side for nearly twenty years. For the sake of those two decades, can't you let her go, just this once?" "Heh, twenty years? Like I begged her to stick around? Cut the crap. You've got two days. One million. Or I'll sign that treatment waiver right away. Don't forget—I'm still legally her husband," he sneered. With that, he hung up. Amelia tried calling back, but his phone was already turned off. She instantly called the caregiver who was looking after her mom. "Has Richard been to the hospital?" "Yeah, he just came by. He checked the balance on her medical account and is talking to the doctors now." He really might go through with it. Amelia grabbed her coat and rushed out the door. "Boss, where are you going?" Lily noticed something was off with her and quickly asked, "Everything okay?" "Got some personal stuff. Gotta step out for a bit," Amelia replied, heading straight to the hospital where her mom was staying. She arrived just in time to see Richard walking out of the building. "Well, look who it is—my darling daughter." Amelia's jaw clenched. "What exactly do you want from me?" Richard gave her the same smug look as always. "You really don't know?" "You seriously aren't scared of karma, are you?" "My biggest punishment? Having you and your mom in my life," Richard snapped before brushing past her and walking off. Amelia stood there, hands trembling, rage boiling in her chest. A sharp pain jabbed through her lower abdomen. Panicked, she called Olivia. "Sounds like stress-related cramps. Try to find somewhere to sit and calm down. But if it doesn't ease up, get to the hospital ASAP," Olivia said. After hanging up, Amelia took a deep breath, forcing herself to settle down. She sat on a nearby bench, and the pain slowly faded. Once she felt a bit better, she exhaled in relief and went to check on her mom. Before leaving, she pulled the nurse aside. "If Richard shows up again, please call me right away." The nurse nodded quickly. "Of course."...... She came straight back to the office after leaving the hospital. Her resignation letter was lying on the desk. But she didn't have the energy to think about it. Shoving the letter into the drawer, she stared at it for a second before picking up her phone to make a call. Raymond was clearly surprised to hear from her. "Amelia? Didn't expect your call." Amelia paused before speaking, "Raymond, can I borrow some money from you?" Raymond, who was in Simon's office at the time, immediately looked toward his older brother. Yep, no one could manipulate a situation better than his brother. He'd even guessed she'd reach out to him. Raymond clicked his tongue, sounding kind of awkward. "Really sorry, Amelia. You wouldn't believe it—because of your situation, my brother froze my credit cards. I've been mooching meals these past few days." Amelia's heart sank fast. She went quiet for a beat, then said, "Sorry to bother you." Raymond felt a bit guilty, "Maybe wait it out a few days? He'll probably cool off soon." "It's fine. Thanks anyway." After hanging up, Raymond looked over at Simon, who was calmly flipping through a contract at the desk like nothing had happened." You're seriously just gonna let Richard mess with her like that?" Simon looked up, his gaze cold. "Why? You feeling sorry for her?" Raymond quickly shook his head. He wouldn't dare. "I'm just worried Amelia might actually get hurt dealing with him. She's your girl, after all." Simon didn't even bother lifting his eyelids. "If she doesn't want to take the easy way, whatever she suffers is on her." At that, Raymond knew better than to keep talking. Say anything more and he'd just be pushing his luck. His brother's heart? Cold as hell. Wants her to stay, sure—but this is how he goes about it? * After hanging up on Raymond, Amelia rubbed her temples, worn out. No one around her could cough up that kind of money. Out of all Simon's crew, Raymond was maybe the only one she knew well enough to ask. If she couldn't get anything from him, then really, she was out of options. There was still Anselme, but she wasn't stupid enough to ask someone who clearly had his own agenda. She sat down, exhaling slowly, trying to quiet the chaos in her mind. Just then, Lily walked in with a file." Miss Clarke, here's the final version of the new product promo plan. It needs Mr. Johnson's signature. The chief secretary said since you haven't officially resigned yet, this still falls under your scope." Amelia nodded. "Just leave it here." Lily dropped the file and left. Amelia skimmed through the plan, then got up and headed to the executive office. The door to Simon's office was slightly open. She knocked twice, and a male voice answered from inside. She pushed the door open and stepped in. Simon looked up, a faint smirk on his face as he eyed her with interest. "Miss Clarke, still hanging around?" Amelia pressed her lips together. "Had something to deal with today. I'll get the resignation stuff handled tomorrow." Simon's gaze darkened a little. "Then please take care of it quickly. We don't want to delay the new manager's onboarding." She paused for a second. "Understood." She placed the plan in front of him. "Here's the product proposal. You can check if anything needs tweaking." He didn't respond, just picked it up and started reading. Simon always treated his work with a level of seriousness that bordered on extreme. He didn't dismiss her, so Amelia had no choice but to stand there quietly as he went through it. The document itself wasn't long, just a dozen pages or so. But Simon took over an hour going through it line by line, asking pointed questions about every detail. He finally signed his name and handed the document back to Amelia after making sure there were no issues. Amelia took it, hesitated for a moment, but stayed put. "Is there anything else, Amelia?" Simon looked at her blankly. After a brief pause, Amelia said, "No, that's all." "Okay. Please close the door on your way out." Simon didn't look up again and went back to his work. Amelia stood there for a couple of seconds, then turned around and left his office. Just now, she'd almost blurted out and asked him for money. She couldn't believe how desperate Richard had made her. And Simon? He wouldn't lend her a cent. Trying to shake off her emotions, Amelia returned to her desk. As soon as work ended, she dialed the lawyer who'd helped her mom back then. Once the call connected, she laid everything out. "Mr. Campbell, in this kind of situation, could it count as extortion?" James Campbell paused. "Not really. Since he's your legal father, you're obligated to support him. If he insists it's just maintenance money, you don't really have a case. At most, he'd get warned or lectured, but I'm worried he might retaliate." Amelia felt like her heart sank straight to the floor. "There's really nothing else I can do?" "Grace's legally considered incapacitated right now. Technically, you could file for divorce on her behalf, but the whole process might drag on for quite a while." Amelia let out a subtle exhale. Knowing Richard's temper, he'd probably do something reckless before the divorce even went through—might even endanger her mom's life. "Sorry I couldn't be of more help." She gave a small smile. "Don't say that. You've already helped a ton. I owe you a meal when I get the chance." James had definitely supported her through a lot. Besides her mom's situation, he'd looked over several of her contracts too. Each time, he squeezed her in despite his packed schedule. She seriously owed him. "No need for that—I should be the one buying," he replied with a chuckle on the other end. "Actually, I've got a favor to ask you this time." "Alright then," she agreed easily. After setting a time to meet, she ended the call. She barely got any sleep that night. The next morning. Just as she stepped into the office, her phone rang. It was the hospital caregiver. "Amelia, your dad just showed up. I saw him talking to the doctor—looked like he asked for some kind of consent form."
