The night is deep and the moment and quiet. Kate deeply sleeping in her bed with soft pillows serve as her head’s resting place for the night covering her body with a soft blanket. It’s as if she must be dreaming or something just right where her bed is located between two windows of her room, from where she’s facing there is an uninvited silhouette staring at her, startled from the supposed intruder as she back towards the farthest edge of her bed when her fingers reaches the switch of her bedside lamp light filled the entire room and there is no one in there except her, she thought there was someone but there is none, none at all, she’s questioning herself whether she’s becoming crazy in imagining things. When she’s about to open her bedroom door the light from the hallway turns on and she heard her father’s door opens, she twist the knob from her door and seeing her father’s face obviously in a hurry to go somewhere, tucking in his shirt and into his jeans and wrap himself with his leather jacket with one hand holding his phone.
“Dad what’s going on?” she asked worried about him.
“Something happened with Roberts and Higgins, locked the doors.” It was more like an order rather than a fatherly advice. Her thoughts suddenly shifted to her friends who probably in a worst place right now. This is one of those worst moments of having a family member or a friend who is in the armed forces or in a police department you can’t help but imagine the worst case scenarios that could happen to them whether it is just a bit complications or into a major one. Kate can feel her heartbeat just pumping inside her as she watches her father strolling along the stairs and running towards the main door. Kate just want to jump in and grab her own keys to follow her father, when she’s about to dump her hands towards her keys her phone rings and an unregistered number pop in her phone screen. She hesitant at first to pick it up for she had no time for any interruptions as of the moment. Eventually she held the device in her proximal hand and press the green icon in her phone screen.
“Hello?” she can feel her breathing increases as she waits for the other end of the line. A few seconds and still is quiet. “Hello, who is this?” she asked again but the other end of the line is still in silence suddenly a resounding drop call stumbled into her ears as the other person ended that mysterious and odd call. Feeling confuse of what she just encountered her mind is now occupied with the caller on whether who could that be and how that person have her number.
“Kate! Did you hear what happened to Higgins and Roberts?” Karen face is all pale as if blood just ran out in her head or even her body, her frightened eyes stared at Kate who is now snapped back into what really is going on right now.
“What?” her question baffles Karen on whether she understood it or hear it.
“Higgins and Roberts’ car was shot multiple times blocks away from the police department.” Somehow that news isn’t new to them, it is a part of their job to encounter such horrible happening, but it is not just some random police officer out there. Edward and Martha are one of those few who Kate consider as family, a brother and sister that she never had and she just found out that probably their lives are critical or the worse part of it. That must be the reason why her father is in such a hurry because it was them who got ambushed. She saw a worried father rushing to his children as he descended to the stairs with jacket and car keys. She wants to jump into her pants and rush to the site but she also can’t help think about the call she received and she’s worried if she left Aunt Karen on her own then something might happened to her.
“Are they alright?” that’s all she could say despite numerous thoughts and ideas coming into her head as of the moment.
“I still don’ know. Let’s just hope for the best, let’s hope nothing bad happened to them.” Karen’s face are full of worries for the two, she considers them as a family as well. They’ve been in constant visit every now and then.
Both of them just sitting in the living room waiting for a call or for even someone to just knock into their door and bring them a good news, it is been an hour since her father left and there is no call from him up until this moment. Kate is antsy in her sit as she taps her finger in her lap watching the clock as it tick tocks every second and every time she would look at the clock or the main door the time seem to tick slowly. She glance at her phone and then trace her glare towards he worried aunt who is sitting across of her with her hands fidgeting as she rubs both of them and also who is obviously not comfortable.
“How long will we wait?” Karen’s eyes are almost watery upon asking Kate the question she also been asking herself for the past hour.
“Can we just go over there?” she feel like getting off her chair and just run out of the house and blaze towards the area of incident. When she look at her Aunt who is staring at her she realize that she’s standing in her feet holding her phone tightly that makes her knuckles whiten.
“Kate calm down, they will call soon, whatever happened to them someone is after them if we ever went out that someone might be outside lurking or what. I am pretty sure they were being followed for those men to know exactly where they are, let’s wait for a call and by morning if there is still no news about the matter then we will go to the station.” Karen is worried sick but she have to be strong for both her and Kate, she can’t mix another worrisome situation to another it will only lead to no good and they will be just crazy thinking about it the entire evening. Kate on the other hand is contemplating whether she will tell her Aunt about the mysterious phone call she received earlier, but then again it might help both of them to be extra careful.
“I.” her voice seemed trap inside her that she can’t even produce the energy to spell out the words. She clears her throat and face her Aunt Karen. “I receive a phone call earlier, just after Dad left, I know there is somebody at the end of the line because I can hear that person breathing but that person did not talk to me, a few seconds past or minutes maybe, the line went dead.” She look at her aunt who is very serious and obviously processing every word Kate had told her.
