Chapter 5

“I’m sure you have a lot of questions, but we have to ask you what happened last night before you passed out first” Buford asked while I was still looking at him. He gestured to one of the chairs in front of his desk and Zaline and I sat down in one of them, then they both looked at me expectantly. I told them about the vision again that I had of Gary, and what happened in the alley in as much detail as I remembered. They both looked at me with serious expressions when I was finished and they had a few questions as to what the hooded figure looked like. I answered them as best I could remember, and Buford looked at me like I was wonder women or something the whole time I talked. “What were you doing near the alley Mr. Nolan?” I asked because I was curious and he looked startled. “You can call me Buford from now on Acadia, but to answer your question, I was headed back home from a meeting when I saw you passing out” He replied. I doubted his huge loft was anywhere near my house or the alley of that neighborhood by the looks of the inside of his house. I had a feeling he was lying for some reason, because I knew all his business meetings...I am the one who scheduled them or he could possibly of had a last-minute one. “Is Gary really dead? You know he works with us as a temp right?” I asked Buford but Zaline answers this time. “Yes sweety he is, I am sorry. Are you ok?” she asked. “Yes and no, actually. It’s tragic about what happened to Gary but it felt as if I already went through the emotions in the vision, you know. What I want to know is who you two were talking about before I knocked and what is this vision stuff I’m having? I know weird stuff is possible because of you” I said looking at her “but does this mean something I need to know about?” They both looked at each other with a grimace and then towards me and I could tell neither of them could form words at the moment. “As you know, Zaline and I have known each other for a long time, and she has a form of magic that is tied to the spirit world. What I’m going to tell you might freak you out, and you have to promise not to run away without hearing us out first” Buford finally spoke up. I nodded and sat on the edge of the chair focusing all of my attention on him. Do I want to know what’s going on? I knew she had spirit guides, as she called them, but magic? Magic is not a real thing, is it? “Our families have been friends for as long as we can remember. We are in a group of people that have all types of magic that are more than voodoo or spirit that she has” he continued. Did I hear him correctly? “Our parents have gone searching for our leader J’havia, leaving us with the responsibility to maintain, protect and control our group. We were once a large group with all types of magic that was controlled by our queen J’havia, who was the most powerful of us all. Our kings and queens produce an heir or heirs with similar abilities, if not stronger and her parents were very powerful. Determined, she kept us all together without the threat of humans knowing who we were and doing any harm to them” He kept explaining and my head was starting to spin, this is ludacris I first thought, but deep down something was tugging at me to listen. “She disappeared fifteen years ago with her young daughter, the next heir, without a trace of where they went. The witches started getting out of control without her leadership or strength to keep us in line. We split into two groups when it got worse, one group that still believes in our leader’s values, and the other trying to destroy them. We are on the side of protecting humans and our secret” he grimaced after saying. Holding up a finger for him to stop for a second, I sunk back into my chair in thought. To sum it up so far, magic is real, and I have all these questions as they spiral in my head. I’ve always known something was up, I feel it deep in my bones and soul. “Am I the person you’re supposed to protect from your conversation earlier?” I asked out loud before I knew it. “Yes Acadia, from the first day you came in the shop, I knew you had abilities, I could sense them. We were to watch over you until you manifested them, and then bring you into the group. That is the way we do things. We bring anyone with magic into our clusters around the world and help them before the other group finds them. We call them Merdique, because well they are horrible” Zaline finally pipes up. My head is spinning with information overload, but I know they are telling the truth, and I’m a very accepting person. I’ve learned how to accept and adapt to things quickly. I’m not going to scream and run away, but I am more curious now than anything since the shock wore off. The only other question is to wonder, what kind of magic do I have?
