Chapter 4

Have you ever had that feeling of dread or the human fight or flight response, and you have no clue why? That is how I would explain this moment. I was still a few blocks from home and I looked around me frantically trying to find out why I felt this way. Nothing suspicious was seen, just couples strolling up and down the sidewalks, the shops closed for the night, and your random car driving down the one-way road. Maybe I shouldn’t be walking home alone this late at night, but the self-defense classes combined with surviving the fights all the time in foster life, I figured I could handle myself. With goosebumps and hyper-awareness, I continue walking home. Hearing a high-pitched laugh across the street I turned my head to look and found a couple that was walking the same direction as I am. Upon looking a but closer, is that who I think it is? I’m stuck between running away or calling out Gary’s name as I remember the vision earlier that day for some reason. I didn’t have time to think anyhow when I saw him run into the alley alone in the next second. Oh no, this is real! Running to see if I was a lunatic with crazy issues or just going by pure instinct, I caught up with him a few seconds later in the alley. I was staring at Gary’s back when I came to a standstill and the hooded figure from my vision was in front of him! What is going on! Yep, I’m going to the looney bin after this. I just know it! Everything happened so fast, but it seemed like slow motion to me as I watched the startled eyes of the hooded figure, then the flash of light thrown at Gary. I looked down to see Gary lying a few feet ahead of me. I could tell he was dead with those lifeless eyes looking at nothing, and it was the same expression from my vision. The hooded figure was gone before I could blink, and now I am in total meltdown mode as I stifle a scream. I think I am going to black out as it all hit me, then I started falling when the darkness pulled at me. I should have felt the concrete catch me, should have felt the pain from the weight of my body hitting it like a thud, but I felt arms catch me right before I hit the ground. I came to and noticed that I was on something soft and not the pavement, but I was in a huge four-poster bed with a beautiful black lace canopy over it. Hoping I’m not in some mental person’s house, or worse, I turn my head around the room to see I’m alone but still unfamiliar with the place. “Thank the voodoo spirits, I'm alone” I mumbled Zaline's favorite phrase. Oh s**t, where’s my phone? Did what happened last night really happen? Where are my shoes? As I spiral a dozen questions off in my head searching frantically for my stuff, I look over the room in my panic. I saw my cell phone on a nightstand beside the bed, and my shoes were set near the door and my body calmed down enough for me to get up and grab them. Looking more at the room itself, I find this person has to have money. The sleek black dressers, white marble floors, and a few pieces of art on the wall scream wealth to me. It’s all spotless as well, like it's just a showroom and has never been lived in or even slept in besides me. I spot a door on my right, then open it to the biggest bathroom I have ever seen. There are dark stony tiles on the walls, white marble floors to match the room, a stand-up shower, and a claw foot tub, with a large mirror above a two-person vanity. The mirror is where I head first. Looking at myself, I see my clothes are fine not even a smudge of dirt, the little eyeliner I had on last night smudged under my eyes, and my hair was in a few knots. I fixed myself up as much as i could quickly, worried because I still did not know whose house I’m in, and it didnt help my phone was dead . Slowly walking down the stairs after I finished, noticing it was daylight so i must have slept through the night. My first thought was it was the first time I'd slept without nightmares in a long time. At the bottom of the stairs I hear muffled voices coming from a room with sliding doors to the right. Looking around, I saw no one else in the hall with me. I sneak on silent feet to lean in to hear who’s house I could be in or what they are planning on doing with me. “What happened last night should have been prevented” I heard an angry male voice say. “We didn’t have any information they were in town! The vision from her was not much to go on, like the for the location for example, or we would have handled it. They know they are in our territory” a female voice, that sounds a lot like Zaline responds. Is she here? What’s going on? Are they talking about me? “They could have harmed her, or worse, they could have taken her if they suspect the same thing we do. She needs to be more protected! We need more than me and you now, he might have seen who she was last night, and they will come back for her” that male voice says again. Taking the opportunity to figure out what was going on and what they are talking about, I knocked on the door. Sounds of low cursing under breath and footsteps walking towards the door were heard when finally, the door swung open and there stands Zaline! “Omg what is going on, how are you here? I’m glad it’s you and not a creeper, but who were you talking to and about what? " I asked her without taking a breathe. She steps in to hug me to calm me down and im so confused but thankful for her hug at the same time. “Come in Arcadia. I’m sure you know your boss Buford, this is his house. He is the one who found you last night and called me” She responded. I looked up at those green eyes of his with even more confusion. How did he find me? Why am I at his house and not Zaline's? What in the name of hell is going on?
