Chapter 5 – A Promise She Never Made

828 Words
The most dangerous lies are not the ones people tell. They are the ones everyone believes. When enough people repeat the same story… the truth begins to sound like a mistake. And Aria was about to discover that she was the only person living inside a different version of her own life. ⸻ The alley fell silent. Daniel and Rowan continued staring at each other. Neither man blinked. Neither looked away. Aria stepped between them. “Enough.” She looked at Daniel. “What did he mean?” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “He doesn’t know when to stop.” “I asked what he meant.” “He wants to confuse you.” Rowan let out a quiet laugh. “No, Daniel.” “I want her to remember.” Daniel’s eyes darkened. “She doesn’t need to remember.” Aria looked at him in disbelief. “What does that mean?” Daniel immediately softened his voice. “I mean… you don’t need strangers filling your head with nonsense.” “He isn’t a stranger to you,” Rowan said quietly. Daniel turned sharply. “You’ve done enough.” “No,” Rowan replied. “Not nearly enough.” ⸻ Aria’s phone rang. It was her brother. Miles. She answered at once. “Miles!” “Hey, little sister,” he said cheerfully. “Daniel told me there was an accident. Are you okay?” “I’m fine.” “You sound frightened.” “I…” Her eyes drifted to the photograph inside the envelope. “Miles…” “Yes?” “Has anyone been following you recently?” A short silence. “What?” “Just answer me.” He laughed. “You’ve been married for one day and now you’re worrying like Mom.” “I’m serious.” “No.” “Nothing strange has happened.” Aria let out a slow breath. “Promise me you’ll be careful.” “I promise.” After hanging up, she slipped the phone back into her bag. Daniel reached for her hand. “We’re going home.” She pulled away. “No.” Both men looked at her. “I’m tired of everyone deciding what I should do.” She faced Rowan. “If you know something…” “…prove it.” ⸻ Rowan nodded. “Come with me.” Daniel stepped forward. “Absolutely not.” Aria didn’t even look at him. “I’m going.” ⸻ Twenty minutes later… Rowan parked outside an old brick building on the edge of the city. It looked abandoned. Broken windows. Peeling paint. A rusted metal sign hung crookedly above the entrance. Aria frowned. “What is this place?” “My office.” She raised an eyebrow. “It doesn’t look like an office.” “It isn’t anymore.” ⸻ Inside… Dust floated through narrow beams of sunlight. Stacks of newspapers covered every table. Maps were pinned to the walls. Photographs connected by red strings stretched across giant boards. Names. Dates. Places. Hundreds of notes. It looked less like an office… and more like someone had spent years solving an impossible puzzle. Aria slowly walked through the room. “What is all this?” “My investigation.” “Into what?” “You.” She froze. “What?” Rowan picked up a thick file. Across the front were two words. ARIA BENNETT He handed it to her. Her hands trembled as she opened it. The first page contained dozens of photographs. Her childhood. School. University. Birthdays. Vacations. Every important moment of her life. Some she remembered. Others… she didn’t. She turned another page. Medical reports. Another. Newspaper clippings. Another. Handwritten notes. Finally… A photograph slipped from the folder. It landed at her feet. She bent down to pick it up. Her breath caught. It showed her standing beside Rowan on a beach at sunset. They were laughing. Her head rested against his shoulder. His hand was wrapped around hers. It wasn’t posed. It was natural. Comfortable. Happy. Tears filled Aria’s eyes. “I…” She stared at the picture. “I don’t remember this.” “I know.” She looked at him. “Is it fake?” “No.” “Photoshopped?” “No.” “Then…” Her voice broke. “…why does it feel real?” Rowan’s eyes glistened. “Because it is.” Before Aria could answer… The old television in the corner suddenly switched on by itself. Static crackled across the screen. Then an image appeared. A man wearing a black hood. His face hidden. He looked directly into the camera. “Good evening, Aria.” Her blood ran cold. The hooded man smiled. “If you’re watching this…” “…then Rowan has already made his biggest mistake.” The screen flickered. The man slowly lifted a photograph toward the camera. It was a picture of Aria. Sleeping. In her own bedroom. Taken… the night before her wedding.
