Chapter 3 – The First Meeting

Some people enter your life by chance. Some arrive by choice. And some… appear because they were never meant to disappear. Aria had no idea which kind Rowan Hale was. All she knew was that someone wanted her to fear him. Someone else wanted her to find him. And somewhere between those two truths… was a lie waiting to be uncovered. ⸻ The room fell silent after the phone call. Aria stared at the dark screen in her hand. Daniel stepped closer. “Who was it?” She quickly locked the phone. “…Wrong number.” Daniel looked unconvinced. “What did they say?” Aria hesitated. She remembered the warning. Don’t let him see the next photograph. Her eyes drifted to the picture lying on the bed. Without thinking, she slipped it back into the envelope. “Nothing important.” Daniel studied her face for a long moment before giving a small nod. “If you say so.” But something in his eyes had changed. A tiny crack. A flicker of doubt. ⸻ By noon, they had returned home. The apartment was exactly as they had left it before the wedding. Fresh flowers stood on the dining table. Wedding gifts were stacked neatly in the living room. Everything looked normal. Everything… except Aria. She couldn’t stop thinking about Rowan. She sat on the sofa and searched his name online. Rowan Hale. Hundreds of results appeared. Her breath caught. Investigative journalist. Award-winning writer. Guest speaker. Television interviews. Magazine covers. She clicked on one article. There he was. The same gray eyes. The same calm expression. The same face from the photographs. He was real. Very real. But why didn’t she remember him? She opened another article. A video interview. She pressed play. Rowan smiled politely at the interviewer. “I’ve learned that the truth doesn’t disappear,” he said. “It only waits for someone brave enough to uncover it.” Aria froze. Something about his voice… It felt… familiar. Not remembered. Felt. Like hearing a song you couldn’t name but somehow knew. Before she could think further, her phone vibrated. A message. Unknown Number. If you want answers, come alone. Below it was an address. An old café across town. 3:00 p.m. ⸻ Aria looked toward the kitchen. Daniel was unpacking wedding gifts. She quietly grabbed her handbag. “I’m going out for a little while.” Daniel looked up. “Where?” “Just… some fresh air.” “I’ll come with you.” “No.” The answer escaped too quickly. Daniel frowned. “I mean…” “I just need some time alone.” He smiled gently. “I understand.” She forced a smile in return. “I’m sorry.” “For what?” “I don’t know.” ⸻ The café was nearly empty. Old jazz music played softly through hidden speakers. Aria stepped inside and looked around. No sign of Rowan. No sign of the mysterious caller. She chose a corner table. Five minutes passed. Ten. Fifteen. Just as she stood to leave… Someone pulled out the chair opposite her. “You’re late.” Aria looked up. Her heart stopped. The man from the photographs sat across from her. Gray suit. Calm eyes. Exactly as she’d seen him. He looked at her for a long moment. Then smiled. A smile filled with sadness. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come.” Aria pushed her chair back. “Who are you?” His smile faded. “…You’re serious.” “I’ve never met you before.” Silence. He stared into her eyes as if searching for something that had been stolen. Finally, he whispered, “They really erased me.” Aria’s pulse quickened. “What are you talking about?” Instead of answering, Rowan reached into his coat pocket. He placed a small silver key on the table. “I’ve been carrying this for three years.” She frowned. “What is it?” “You gave it to me.” “I don’t even know you.” “I know.” He looked down at the key before meeting her eyes again. “And that’s exactly what scares me.” Before Aria could ask another question… A loud crash shattered the quiet café. The front window exploded inward. People screamed. Glass flew across the room. A black motorcycle sped past the entrance. Rowan reacted instantly. He grabbed Aria’s wrist. “Run!” She didn’t move. Everything had happened too fast. Then she saw it. A thin trail of smoke rising from the shattered window. Something small rolled across the café floor… …and stopped beneath their table. A metal cylinder. Its red light blinked once. Twice. Rowan’s eyes widened. “Get down!”
