Chapter Six — The Choice That Breaks Everything

They didn’t stop until the world let them. Not because it was safe. But because something else had decided they could go no further. ⸻ The ground beneath them changed again—smoother now, darker, like polished stone stretching endlessly in all directions. The air was still, unnaturally so, as if even sound wasn’t allowed to exist here without permission. Lucien finally slowed. Then stopped. ⸻ Ethan’s chest rose and fell rapidly as he tried to catch his breath. “Please tell me we’re not still being chased.” Lucien didn’t answer immediately. That silence was becoming familiar. And dangerous. ⸻ “We’re not being chased,” Lucien said at last. Ethan exhaled in relief—too quickly. “Because they don’t need to chase you anymore.” ⸻ The relief vanished instantly. Ethan turned to him. “What is that supposed to mean?” Lucien’s gaze shifted past him—focused on something ahead. Something Ethan hadn’t noticed yet. ⸻ “Look,” Lucien said quietly. ⸻ Ethan hesitated. Then slowly turned. ⸻ At first, he thought it was just more of the same—endless dark ground, empty space, nothing alive. Then he saw it. ⸻ A structure. If it could even be called that. ⸻ It rose out of the ground like it had grown there—not built, not placed, but formed from the world itself. Tall, jagged, and shifting slightly at the edges, like it couldn’t fully stay in one shape. Dark… but not completely. Something inside it pulsed faintly. Like a heartbeat. ⸻ Ethan felt it immediately. A pull. Stronger than anything he had felt before. ⸻ “What is that?” he whispered. Lucien didn’t look at him. “It’s where this ends,” he said. ⸻ Ethan’s stomach tightened. “Ends how?” Lucien finally turned. And there was something in his expression Ethan hadn’t seen before. Not just tension. Not just conflict. Something heavier. Like he already knew the outcome. ⸻ “You’re a bridge,” Lucien said. “That means you’re not just connected to both worlds… you anchor them.” Ethan frowned. “I don’t understand.” “That place—” Lucien gestured toward the structure “—is where the connection stabilizes.” “And… what does that mean for me?” ⸻ Lucien didn’t answer. ⸻ Ethan’s chest tightened. “Lucien.” Still nothing. ⸻ “Say it,” Ethan demanded. ⸻ Lucien’s voice, when it came, was quiet. Too quiet. “If you step inside… one of two things happens.” Ethan’s heart pounded. “Which are?” ⸻ Lucien held his gaze. “You either seal the connection… and everything goes back to normal.” Ethan swallowed. “Or?” ⸻ A pause. A long one. ⸻ “Or you become the connection permanently.” ⸻ The words sank in slowly. Too slowly. ⸻ “What does that mean?” Ethan asked, though part of him already knew. Lucien’s voice dropped. “It means you don’t come back.” ⸻ Silence. ⸻ The world felt smaller suddenly. Heavier. ⸻ Ethan looked back at the structure. The pull was stronger now. Calling him. ⸻ “And the Seekers?” he asked quietly. “They want you to choose the second option,” Lucien said. “Because then they can control the bridge.” Ethan clenched his fists. “So either I disappear… or I become something they can use?” “Yes.” ⸻ Ethan let out a breath that didn’t feel like enough. “That’s not a choice.” “It is,” Lucien said softly. “It’s a trap.” “I know.” ⸻ The ground beneath them pulsed faintly again. Like the world was waiting. ⸻ Ethan turned back to Lucien. “And you?” he asked. “Where do you fit into this?” ⸻ That question hit harder than anything else. Lucien didn’t look away. “I was sent to make sure the connection is handled,” he said. Ethan’s chest tightened. “Handled how?” ⸻ Another pause. ⸻ “By making sure you don’t become a threat.” ⸻ The words felt sharp. But Lucien didn’t sound cold. He sounded… conflicted. ⸻ Ethan let out a quiet, humorless laugh. “So what, you’ve been protecting me this whole time just to bring me here?” Lucien stepped closer. “No.” “Then what?” ⸻ “For a moment…” Lucien said, his voice lower now, “I thought I could change the outcome.” ⸻ Ethan’s breath caught. ⸻ “You thought?” he asked. Lucien’s jaw tightened. “I wasn’t supposed to care about you.” “But you do.” ⸻ That wasn’t a question. ⸻ Lucien didn’t deny it. ⸻ The space between them felt charged again. Like everything unsaid was pressing in all at once. ⸻ “Ethan…” Lucien started. But Ethan stepped closer before he could finish. “No,” Ethan said quietly. “You don’t get to start pulling away now.” Lucien froze. ⸻ “You don’t get to act like this is just some mission,” Ethan continued, his voice unsteady but firm. “Not after everything.” ⸻ Lucien’s control slipped—just slightly. “You think I don’t know that?” he said. ⸻ Ethan’s heart pounded. “Then prove it.” ⸻ The words came out before he could stop them. But this time— He didn’t regret them. ⸻ Lucien stared at him. Like he was trying to decide something. Something irreversible. ⸻ “You don’t understand what you’re asking,” Lucien said. “Then show me,” Ethan replied. ⸻ The pull from the structure grew stronger. The world around them started to shift again. Time was running out. ⸻ Lucien stepped forward. Closing the distance completely. ⸻ “This is the last chance to walk away,” he said quietly. Ethan shook his head. “I’m not walking away from you.” ⸻ That was it. That was the moment everything changed. ⸻ Lucien’s hand moved to Ethan’s face again—but this time, there was no hesitation. No restraint. ⸻ “You’re choosing something you can’t undo,” Lucien whispered. Ethan’s voice softened. “Maybe I don’t want to undo it.” ⸻ And then— Lucien gave in. ⸻ He pulled Ethan closer— Not careful this time. Not hesitant. ⸻ And closed the distance between them. ⸻ The world around them reacted instantly. The ground cracked. The air split. The structure pulsed violently. ⸻ But neither of them pulled away. ⸻ Because in that moment— Nothing else mattered. ⸻ Not the danger. Not the consequences. Not the choice waiting for them. ⸻ Just this. ⸻ Just them. ⸻ And somewhere deep within the shifting world— Something awakened. ⸻ Watching. Waiting. ⸻ Because the choice hadn’t been made yet. But now— It would come at a cost neither of them was ready to face.
