Chapter Seven — The Cost of Choosing

1096 Words
The world didn’t forgive them. It reacted. ⸻ The moment shattered—not gently, not slowly—but violently. The ground beneath them split with a sharp, echoing crack. The dark surface fractured outward from where they stood, glowing veins of light bursting through like something alive had been awakened beneath it. Ethan pulled back first—breath uneven, heart racing. “Lucien—” “I know.” Lucien’s voice was tighter now, sharper. Whatever had just passed between them—it wasn’t over, but it had consequences. Big ones. ⸻ The structure ahead pulsed harder. Faster. Like it had noticed. Like it was calling him again. ⸻ Ethan pressed a hand to his chest. “It’s… stronger now.” Lucien’s eyes darkened. “Because you answered it.” “I didn’t do anything!” “You did,” Lucien said, stepping closer—but not touching him this time. “You chose connection.” ⸻ The word lingered. Heavy. ⸻ “And that’s bad?” Ethan asked. Lucien hesitated. “Yes.” ⸻ The air around them shifted violently. A low, distorted sound echoed—not distant this time. Close. Too close. ⸻ “They’re here,” Lucien said. Ethan turned sharply. “Already?!” “No,” Lucien corrected, his gaze scanning the space. “Not just them.” ⸻ The shadows didn’t creep in this time. They formed. Right in front of them. ⸻ Tall. Twisted. Unnatural. ⸻ Multiple shapes emerged from the fractured ground, their forms flickering like they couldn’t decide how to exist. The same presence Ethan had seen before—but clearer now. Stronger. More aware. ⸻ Ethan instinctively stepped back. Lucien stepped in front of him. ⸻ “Stay behind me,” Lucien said. Ethan grabbed his arm. “You said they want me alive!” “They do,” Lucien replied. “That doesn’t mean they won’t hurt you first.” ⸻ The nearest Seeker shifted, its form stretching unnaturally. And then— It spoke. ⸻ Not in words. Not clearly. But Ethan felt it. Inside his head. ⸻ You belong to us. ⸻ Ethan flinched, gripping Lucien’s arm tighter. “Did you hear that?” “Yes.” ⸻ Another voice. Closer. Stronger. ⸻ The bridge has awakened. ⸻ The structure behind them pulsed violently in response. The connection was growing. Out of control. ⸻ Lucien’s expression hardened. “We don’t have time.” “For what?!” Ethan demanded. Lucien turned to him. And this time— There was no hesitation. ⸻ “You have to decide now.” ⸻ Ethan’s chest tightened. “Decide what?” “You go into the structure… and end this.” Ethan stared at him. “End it how?!” “By sealing the connection.” “And what happens to me?” ⸻ Lucien didn’t answer. ⸻ Ethan let out a shaky breath. “Say it.” ⸻ Lucien’s voice dropped. “You might not come back.” ⸻ The words hit harder this time. Because now— There was no distance left between them. No space to pretend this wasn’t real. ⸻ Another Seeker moved closer. The ground trembled beneath it. ⸻ Delay is not permitted. ⸻ Ethan’s pulse raced. “And if I don’t?” Lucien’s jaw tightened. “Then they take you.” ⸻ Silence. ⸻ Ethan looked past Lucien—at the creatures closing in, at the structure calling him, at the world literally breaking around them. Then back at Lucien. ⸻ “You knew this was coming,” Ethan said. “Yes.” “And you still brought me here.” “I didn’t have a choice.” ⸻ Ethan stepped forward. Closing the distance again. ⸻ “You always have a choice,” he said quietly. Lucien’s eyes flickered. “For someone like me?” he asked. Ethan held his gaze. “Especially for someone like you.” ⸻ For a moment— Everything else faded. ⸻ The Seekers. The noise. The collapsing world. ⸻ All of it became background. ⸻ “You’re asking me to let you go,” Lucien said. Ethan shook his head. “I’m asking you to trust me.” ⸻ Another voice surged through the air— Stronger. More commanding. ⸻ The bridge must be claimed. ⸻ The Seekers moved closer. Faster now. ⸻ Lucien turned sharply, stepping fully in front of Ethan again. “I won’t let them take you,” he said. Ethan grabbed his hand. “And I won’t let you lose me either.” ⸻ Lucien froze. ⸻ “You said I have a choice,” Ethan continued, his voice steadier now. “So I’m making one.” ⸻ The structure behind them pulsed. Brighter. Stronger. ⸻ Ethan stepped back slowly. Out of Lucien’s reach. ⸻ “Ethan—” “It’s the only way,” Ethan said. ⸻ Lucien moved forward instantly—but Ethan stopped him with a look. ⸻ “No,” Ethan said softly. “If you come with me… you might not make it back either.” “I don’t care.” “I do.” ⸻ That stopped him. ⸻ The distance between them grew. Just slightly. But enough. ⸻ “You said this was dangerous,” Ethan added. “That being close to me would change things.” Lucien didn’t respond. Because he knew. It already had. ⸻ Ethan gave a small, shaky smile. “Guess you were right.” ⸻ The Seekers lunged. ⸻ Lucien turned instantly, energy cracking through the air around him as he pushed them back—but more were coming. Too many. ⸻ “Go!” Lucien shouted. ⸻ Ethan hesitated. Just for a second. ⸻ Then ran. ⸻ Toward the structure. ⸻ The pull was overwhelming now. Every step felt heavier—but also inevitable. Like this had always been waiting for him. ⸻ Behind him, the world erupted. Lucien fighting. The Seekers closing in. Reality breaking apart. ⸻ Ethan didn’t look back. He couldn’t. If he did— He might stop. ⸻ And he didn’t trust himself to choose again. ⸻ The structure opened. Not physically. But something shifted—like it recognized him. Accepted him. ⸻ Ethan stepped forward. One step away. ⸻ Then— He stopped. ⸻ Because he felt it. ⸻ Lucien. ⸻ Not physically. But something deeper. Still connected. Still there. ⸻ Ethan closed his eyes briefly. Then whispered— “I’m not leaving you.” ⸻ And stepped inside. ⸻ The world exploded into light. ⸻ And behind him— Lucien screamed his name.
