Chapter Eight — What Remains

880 Words
There was no ground. No sky. No sound. ⸻ Ethan didn’t feel himself fall. He didn’t feel anything at all. ⸻ For a moment—an endless, stretching moment—he wasn’t sure he still existed. ⸻ Then— Light. ⸻ Not bright. Not blinding. But everywhere. Soft and endless, like he had stepped inside something alive. ⸻ Ethan blinked slowly, his breath returning in uneven waves. “Where… am I?” ⸻ The words didn’t echo. They spread. Like the space itself had heard him. ⸻ You are within the connection. ⸻ The voice wasn’t loud. It wasn’t quiet either. It simply was. Everywhere. Inside him. Around him. ⸻ Ethan’s chest tightened. “What are you?” ⸻ A pause. Then— We are what you have always been part of. ⸻ Ethan frowned, his thoughts racing. “That doesn’t answer my question.” ⸻ The light shifted slightly. Not forming a shape. But focusing. ⸻ You seek a name. A form. Something human. We are beyond that. ⸻ Ethan let out a shaky breath. “Okay… then answer this. What happens to me now?” ⸻ Silence. Then— That depends on your choice. ⸻ Ethan’s stomach dropped. “I already made a choice. I came here.” ⸻ You chose to enter. Not what you become. ⸻ The words settled heavily. ⸻ Ethan looked down at his hands. They looked the same. But they didn’t feel the same. ⸻ “What are my options?” he asked quietly. ⸻ The light dimmed slightly. Not darker. Just… deeper. ⸻ You may seal the connection. Restore the boundary. Return to your world. Ethan’s breath caught. “And Lucien?” ⸻ A pause. Longer this time. ⸻ He remains where he belongs. ⸻ Something in Ethan twisted. “That means I won’t see him again.” ⸻ No answer. But he understood. ⸻ “And the other option?” Ethan asked, though part of him already knew. ⸻ The light pulsed once. ⸻ You become the bridge fully. ⸻ Ethan’s chest tightened. “Meaning?” ⸻ You remain here. You exist between worlds. You hold the connection. ⸻ Ethan swallowed. “And Lucien?” ⸻ This time— The answer came immediately. ⸻ He would be able to find you. ⸻ Silence. ⸻ Ethan closed his eyes briefly. Of course. Of course that was the choice. ⸻ Go back to a normal life— Alone. ⸻ Or stay here— And never really live again. ⸻ But not alone. ⸻ “That’s not fair,” Ethan whispered. ⸻ Balance is not fairness. ⸻ Ethan let out a quiet, frustrated breath. “You’re asking me to give up everything.” ⸻ You were never fully part of that world to begin with. ⸻ That hit harder than anything else. ⸻ Ethan’s thoughts spiraled. His home. His life. Everything he knew. ⸻ Then— Lucien. ⸻ The way he looked at him. The way he hesitated. The way he didn’t let go. ⸻ Ethan clenched his fists. ⸻ “Why me?” he asked. ⸻ The light shifted again. Closer. ⸻ Because you can choose. ⸻ Ethan let out a small, bitter laugh. “That doesn’t feel like much of a choice.” ⸻ It is more than most are given. ⸻ Silence. ⸻ Then— A different feeling. ⸻ Faint. But there. ⸻ “Lucien…” Ethan whispered. ⸻ Something pulsed through the light. A disturbance. ⸻ “He’s still out there, isn’t he?” ⸻ Yes. ⸻ Ethan’s heart tightened. “Is he… okay?” ⸻ A pause. ⸻ He is resisting. ⸻ Ethan’s breath caught. “Resisting what?” ⸻ The answer came— Sharper this time. ⸻ Us. Them. Everything. ⸻ Ethan’s eyes widened. “He’s fighting?” ⸻ For you. ⸻ That was it. ⸻ That was all it took. ⸻ Ethan stepped forward— Even though there was nowhere to step. ⸻ “Then I’m not leaving him.” ⸻ The light flickered. Unstable now. ⸻ That is not the logical choice. ⸻ “I don’t care.” ⸻ You will lose your world. ⸻ “I already did.” ⸻ You will lose your future. ⸻ Ethan’s voice steadied. “Not if he’s in it.” ⸻ Silence. Deep. Watching. ⸻ Then— The light shifted completely. ⸻ Not resisting anymore. Not questioning. ⸻ Accepting. ⸻ Then choose. ⸻ Ethan didn’t hesitate. ⸻ “I’m staying.” ⸻ The moment the words left his lips— Everything changed. ⸻ The light surged violently, rushing toward him—not attacking, not harming, but becoming something else. ⸻ Becoming him. ⸻ Ethan gasped as something pulled at him—not physically, but deeper than that. His thoughts. His presence. His very existence. ⸻ And yet— He didn’t fight it. ⸻ Because he wasn’t alone. ⸻ Not anymore. ⸻ Far away— Beyond the light— Beyond the breaking world— ⸻ Lucien felt it. ⸻ The moment Ethan chose. ⸻ The moment everything shifted. ⸻ And suddenly— The connection between them wasn’t fragile anymore. ⸻ It was permanent. ⸻ And for the first time— Lucien wasn’t reaching for Ethan. ⸻ He was being pulled toward him. ⸻ Whether he wanted to be… Or not.
