Chapter Five: When Fear Turns Into Something Else

985 Words
They didn’t stop running. Not even when the world behind them fractured into silence. Not even when the pressure in the air faded enough to suggest they were safe. Lucien kept moving. And Ethan… kept holding on. ⸻ “Lucien—wait,” Ethan finally gasped, pulling slightly on his hand. “We can’t just keep running without explaining anything!” Lucien slowed—but didn’t stop. His grip loosened just a little, like he was afraid of what would happen if he let go completely. “We’re not safe yet,” he said. Ethan stepped closer anyway. “We haven’t been safe since I met you.” That made Lucien pause. Just for a second. ⸻ The space around them had shifted again. They were inside something quieter now—a narrow stretch of land between broken light and shadow. The air felt less hostile here, but not welcoming. More like… it was observing them from a distance. Waiting to decide what they were. ⸻ Ethan exhaled shakily. “Okay. We need to slow down. Talk.” Lucien turned slightly. “There’s nothing to talk about right now.” “That’s not true.” “It is.” Ethan stepped closer again. “Then why do you keep acting like you care if I survive or not?” Lucien’s jaw tightened. ⸻ That question hung there. Heavy. Uncomfortable. ⸻ “I told you,” Lucien said quietly, “you’re not supposed to be involved in this.” “And yet here I am,” Ethan replied. “So clearly, something went wrong.” Lucien looked at him then. Really looked. And something in his expression shifted. Not fear. Not anger. Something worse. Something softer. ⸻ “You shouldn’t be this calm,” Lucien said. Ethan gave a small, breathless laugh. “I’m not calm.” “You’re standing too close to me.” Ethan blinked. “So are you.” That made Lucien go silent. ⸻ And for the first time since everything began— Neither of them moved away. ⸻ The distance between them wasn’t gone. But it was shrinking. Slowly. Unavoidably. ⸻ Ethan lowered his voice. “When you touched my face earlier… what was that?” Lucien hesitated. Too long. ⸻ “That shouldn’t have happened,” he said finally. “But it did.” “Yes.” “And?” Lucien’s eyes flickered away for a second—like he was struggling with something internal. Then back to Ethan. “And I felt it too.” ⸻ Ethan’s breath caught. “Felt what?” Lucien didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer. ⸻ This time, Ethan didn’t move back. ⸻ “It’s not supposed to be possible,” Lucien said softly. “Not between us.” “Between us?” Ethan repeated, voice quieter now. Lucien’s gaze dropped briefly to Ethan’s lips—then quickly away again, like he regretted it immediately. “Yes.” ⸻ The air changed again. Not danger this time. Something else. Something heavier. More intimate. ⸻ Ethan’s heart was beating too fast now. “Lucien…” “Don’t,” Lucien murmured. “Don’t what?” “Don’t say my name like that.” Ethan frowned slightly. “Like what?” Lucien’s breath slowed. And when he spoke again, his voice was lower. Careful. Almost strained. “Like it means something to you.” ⸻ Silence. ⸻ Ethan stepped closer. Now there was almost nothing between them. “Doesn’t it?” he asked. Lucien’s hand twitched at his side. Like he was fighting the urge to touch him again. ⸻ “You’re human,” Lucien said, but it sounded less like a fact and more like a warning he wasn’t sure he believed anymore. “And you’re not answering my question,” Ethan replied softly. ⸻ Lucien finally exhaled. Slow. Controlled. But not steady. “You’re making this harder,” he admitted. Ethan tilted his head slightly. “Harder how?” Lucien’s eyes finally met his again. And this time, there was no hiding it. ⸻ “Harder to keep my distance.” ⸻ The words landed between them like a quiet explosion. Ethan didn’t speak. Neither did Lucien. ⸻ Instead— Lucien reached out again. This time, he didn’t stop at Ethan’s wrist. His hand moved to Ethan’s waist—careful, hesitant, like he was testing something fragile. ⸻ Ethan’s breath hitched immediately. “Lucien…” “Tell me to stop,” Lucien said quietly. Ethan didn’t. ⸻ That hesitation was enough. Lucien pulled him just slightly closer. Not forceful. Not urgent. Just inevitable. ⸻ The space between them disappeared completely. Ethan could feel him now—real, steady, close enough that everything else in the world faded into background noise. ⸻ “This is dangerous,” Lucien whispered. Ethan swallowed. “Everything with you is dangerous.” “That’s not what I mean.” “Then what do you mean?” ⸻ Lucien hesitated. Then— “You’re not supposed to feel like this around me.” Ethan’s voice dropped. “And yet I do.” ⸻ A long silence. ⸻ Then Lucien did something he hadn’t done before. He leaned his forehead gently against Ethan’s. Just for a second. Like he couldn’t help it anymore. Like holding back was starting to hurt more than giving in. ⸻ Ethan’s hands slowly moved up—stopping at Lucien’s arms. Neither of them moved away. ⸻ “This can’t become something,” Lucien whispered. Ethan closed his eyes slightly. “It already is.” ⸻ That made Lucien go still. Completely still. ⸻ Then, barely audible— “Then we’re both in trouble.” ⸻ A faint sound echoed in the distance again. But neither of them moved. Not immediately. Not yet. Because for the first time since everything began— The danger didn’t feel like the closest thing to them anymore. ⸻ Something else did.
