Chapter 3

910 Words
When I wake up in the morning, something feels strange. It is almost like the day feels brighter and the birds outside my door sing louder. Perhaps the day is trying to compensate me for the stressful mess that was the previous day but all that changes when I hear the deep voice as I am making my way down the stairs. My brow furrows as I wonder who it is and that is when I see him standing there in a navy blue, long sleeved shirt and black trousers. His braids hang down to his back and he looks up at me, catching my gaze directly then he nods. “Alexandria. Please come,” my father, who is standing beside him, says. I walk down to the foot of the stairs then I stand there, watching them. “Alexandria. It's nice to meet you again. I trust you remember my name?” He asks. “Xavier,” I say and he nods, seemingly pleased. “It is a special full moon in a week. It will be the seventh full moon of the year and the mating festival will be held at Alpha Luca's residence. Your skills as a hostess have been noted and you will be part of the team assigned to plan the event,” he says. There is a soft smile on his face, one that makes him look incredibly handsome but I know this is not a request, it is an order. “I don't want to come,” I say. Xavier's eyes narrow and I can see a brief flash of the fierce wolf that he is. I get the urge to step back but I maintain my ground. “Pardon me, I seem to have misheard you. I think…” “I said I'm not going,” I say again, adding more force to my voice this time. I can see my father pale behind Xavier. He rushes to the man's side. “Please, forgive my daughter. It is still the morning and she just…” “No, Patrick. I believe she knows exactly what she said,” Xavier said. His voice is dangerously low and his face is void of emotion. “You do know the implications of your actions, don't you?” He asks. “I…” “You are violating the direct orders of your alpha. You do understand that, don't you?” “I just…” “I will ask again, Alexandria. This time, I would like you to think about your reply very carefully. Do you understand?” He asks. I nod. A part of me still wants to tell him off but I know what the repercussions would be for my father and I. “Alpha Lucas has asked for your presence in his residence at the Red estate in order to assist with hosting the guests at the mating festival. What is your answer?” He asks. I look him in the eye, tempted to repeat what I'd said before. He raised an eyebrow, silently daring me. “I would be…I would be honored to accept his invitation,” I say to him and he nods with a half smile. “Smart girl,” he whispers. I can perceive his scent and the intensity of his gaze makes me want to look away but I hold his eyes. He seems to weigh me silently. He nods and turns around. “Very well then. A driver will be sent to pick you up this evening. Be ready. I would hate to see him come back empty-handed,” Xavier says. I watch him as he leaves, his broad shoulders nearly filling our doorway. My father escorts him to his car. When my father returns, I am in my room and anger threatens to cause me to explode from within. He opens the door and stares at me with what can only be described as a mix of fear and rage. “What were you thinking? Do you want to throw away your life? Do you know what they could do to you? Do you know what could happen to us if you disobey the Alpha's orders? Of course, you do. You have seen it happen many times. Lucas recently started leading this pack so his ears are perked up for the slightest hint of rebellion. He would not tolerate anything that looks like it at all. He will go to great lengths to root it out and burn it up unless he will be seen as weak. That is the person you're testing?” He asks. “I don't like being pushed around,” I snap at him. My father pauses then shakes his head. “No one likes being pushed around, little dove but this is life. We do what we must. We do what we must,” he says and starts to walk away then he pauses. “Please prepare. This is not easy for either of us.” “Seems easy enough for you,” I say to him. He opens his mouth to speak, pauses, and walks away then he closes the door. I hiss and then punch at the wall in my room. My fist sinks in and I stare at it. There are times when I forget that I, too, am a werewolf. In between playing hostess and being part of my father's cowering, it almost feels like I am something else.
