CHAPTER 6

Fiona “Omega school?” I asked softly before I winced. I’d been told not to speak unless spoken to. That kind of defiance was why I had so many scars on my thighs. “What’s that?” Canon bared his teeth as he whirled around toward me. “You’ve never even heard of omega school?” Afraid to speak again, I shook my head. There were schools for this kind of thing? That would be helpful—there was so much I didn’t know. And I’d been punished for it. I risked my safety with another question. “How can I attend?” Knox laughed hollowly. “You’re kidding, right? She’s kidding.” Canon ushered Knox out, and I found myself alone again. Canon took the warmth with him. It felt nice when he was around, or maybe it was just the heat of his fury. Either way, I was cold when I was alone. I sighed, crawled into bed, and pulled the covers over me. I hadn’t lied to Canon—this room was the nicest thing I’d ever seen. It was all I could do not to gawk at the hotel when we’d first arrived. The bed was soft. The bathroom was clean. There wasn’t a padlock on my door. And no one had hit me. The alphas didn’t even want to touch me. I wasn’t sure what to do with that. It was a welcome relief, but I also didn’t understand my body’s reaction to them. I didn’t want them to touch me. Did I? And Canon. That feeling stayed with me even after he was long gone. Whatever it was, it felt important. And he hated it. “It’s true,” a female voice said in wonder. “You’re an omega.” The voice had me scrambling up on my bed, and when I turned to face the door, my heart pounded. I should have closed the door and locked it. I just loved that it could be open when I was alone—the thought that I could access the outside world. And now the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen stood in the doorway. Blonde curls flowed down her back, and her makeup was artfully done. She was tall and willowy and everything that I wasn’t. She was a picture of elegance in just a pair of jeans and a tank top. “Oh, you don’t have to be afraid. My name is Giselle. I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m the Omega of Crescent Delta Pack. We’re next door to you.” Mutely, I stared at her. “Some of our members work here. I do, too, from time to time. Nico called and asked if I could bring you some things. He explained that you’d been injured.” Another omega. My wolf rose to the surface, but I didn’t understand why. She just laughed. “Really, Fiona, you don’t have to be jealous. I’m very happy in my pack. I’ve been around your alphas for the better part of five years now, and we’ve never touched like that.” Jealous. What did I have to be jealous about? They weren’t my alphas. “May I come in?” “You’re asking permission?” “I am.” She frowned. “Canon said this was your room.” My room? As in, I had a say about who could come in? “Yes, you can come in. I guess I could use some new clothes.” “Sweetheart, I brought you more than new clothes.” Smiling warmly, she stepped inside, and still, my wolf didn’t sink back inside me. She’d never quite reacted this way before. Normally, she hid deep inside me, but something about Giselle triggered her. It made me wary. “I’m also here if you want to talk. I know how difficult it is for an omega to process pain.” Was it? It seemed like I’d been in pain my whole life. It was difficult for me to process not being in pain. “Are you here to befriend me and then spy on me? You don’t need to waste your time. I know there are cameras up everywhere. I’m already being watched.” “I’m here to befriend you, but not spy on you. Truth be told, I was excited when Demetrius told me there was another omega I could talk to. No one else really understands, and it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to hang out with one. As for the cameras, they’re in the hall because this is a hotel, but there aren’t any in your room.” I frowned. “What do you mean? Omegas need to be watched at all times.” Giselle’s eyes widened. “Who told you that? Were you in danger? Did you need extra protection?” “My last alpha. He said omegas couldn’t be trusted.” “Then I’m glad he’s dead, or I’d try to kill him myself,” Giselle said flatly. “There are no cameras in your room, Fiona. You don’t need to be watched. I can see now why you’re so wary. I do hope you get to relax here. I know Black Ashe has been reluctant to take on a new omega after their last one died, but they’re good men. They’ll take care of you.” I thought about what Canon had said to me. He didn’t sound like he was going to take care of me. Giselle started pulling out items from the bags. There were jeans, pajamas, sweats, some casual and nicer tops, and dresses. I stared at the pile in awe. I’d never seen so many clothes before. “You brought a lot for me to choose from. It might just be easier if you choose for me.” “Fiona, these are all for you. Not for you to choose from,” she said with a laugh. Then, she opened up her purse and took out a pouch. “Now, I didn’t ask the alphas if it was okay to give these to you because, frankly, it’s none of their business. I know how nerve-wracking being injured and in a strange pack can be. These heat suppressants should help until you feel safe.” “Heat suppressants? What are they?” Confused, she pulled out the bottle of pills. “They’re exactly that. You can take these once a day as a preventative. I’ve brought you enough for two months. As long as you take them, you won’t go into heat for twenty-four hours.” “Heat,” I said flatly. That’s what had upset Talon so much—that I’d never gone into heat. “And what is that?” “What is...” Giselle’s voice trailed off as she stared at me. “Fiona, have you never gone into heat?” Leaning forward, I snatched the pills from her and retreated to the other side of the room. “Thank you for these.” Whatever heat was, it couldn’t be good. It was the reason I’d been as protected as I was. Even Talon hadn’t dared to violate an omega who wasn’t in heat. “Fiona, please look at me. I’d like to help you,” Giselle said gently. “Do you know what an omega is?” “A prisoner,” I said softly. “A slave.” Paling, she hurried forward and took my hands. I almost jerked away, but the touch was warming and comforting, and my wolf retreated just a little and rumbled. There had been other wolves in Talon’s pack who liked to touch me with love, who seemed to seek comfort from me or for me. I was never quite sure why, but Talon rarely let them into my room. “An omega is such a special wolf, Fiona. You’re a special wolf. You’re the heart of the pack. You give them peace and purpose. Love. The heat is a strange time, but it pulls all your alphas together to service you. To make you feel good and hopefully breed you.” Horrified, I pulled away. “What? That’s what heat is? I’m going to want them to touch me?” I’d seen the other alphas rutting with females. Often in front of me, hoping it would trigger my heat. The act hadn’t looked pleasant for the female. “You’re going to need it, and it will be okay. They’ll take care of you in every way,” she said with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. “Now, I can tell I’ve overwhelmed you. That’s okay. One pill a day, and I’ll come back to check on you. When you want to know more, I’ll tell you. Just know that you’re safe here. It sounds like your previous alpha wasn’t a good wolf, but Canon, Nico, and Knox won’t let anything happen to you.” I almost laughed. Talon not being a good wolf was barely scratching the surface. “Thank you for this. I’ll come to you if I need anything,” I said softly and, impulsively, reached out and touched her again. She squeezed my hand, and I sighed. It was strangely comforting to have her here. “Get some sleep, Fiona. And I’ll see you in the morning.” * I woke up with a start and sensed the wolf outside my door. Hurriedly, I put on a pair of jeans and a plain white T-shirt. From how my wolf reacted, it was an alpha, and he would barge in any minute. My heart skipped a beat, and I stood frozen in the room, waiting for him to come in. There was a knock at the door. “Fiona? It’s Nico.” He knocked? Was he waiting for permission? Slowly, I walked to the door and opened it. His gaze moved up and down my body, and I felt strangely nervous. It was stupid—it’s not like I wasn’t used to wolves staring at me. “Good morning,” I said softly. “Breakfast. And then you can see the rest of the employees.” As he spoke, he turned and started walking up the hall. Hurriedly, I closed my door and jogged to catch up with him. Most alphas healed at an incredible rate, so I’d never seen one who was scarred before. I had a strange urge to reach out and touch him, to see if he needed anything, but there was always a rule about touching other wolves without permission, so I stuffed my hands in my pockets. He was silent during breakfast, which consisted of cereal. My appetite was stronger every day I stayed at the hotel, and I wolfed down three bowls, knowing full well that his gaze was on me. “Do you know much about kids?” he asked gruffly. Blankly, I stared at him. “What do you mean?” “I mean, do you know how to look after kids?” His voice had grown more impatient, and I shrank back, wondering what I’d done to upset him. I hadn’t spoken out of turn. Was it because I’d asked a question? “I’ve never really been around children,” I said softly. “Daisy is the only toddler I’ve ever known.” He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. When he spoke again, his voice was softer. “Canon, Knox, and I are worried about Daisy. Everyone loves her. The employees here dote on her. But she has no structure, no stability. Everyone pitches in to look after her, so she gets passed around a lot.” “I understand,” I murmured. “I’m sure the three of you are very busy.” I kept my eyes downcast, locked on the table, in case this offended him. “So. Since you’re here with nothing to do—and a pile of debt to work off—you can be her nanny. Organize her schedule—when she’ll be with us or with you. Look after her during the day. Help with dinners and bedtimes. Okay?” “Of course,” I said. I didn’t know much about kids, but I owed a debt, and Daisy was adorable. I would happily spend time with her, but even if I hated the prospect, I was in no position to argue. “I’ll do whatever you want me to do,” I said softly, finally raising my eyes to meet his. “f**k,” he snarled and stormed out of the kitchen. I heard a loud sound, and less than ten seconds later, Canon stormed in, dark eyes blazing with anger. “What the f**k did you do?” he growled.
