Chapter 4

Fiona “You’re a f*****g broken omega, and I’m going to make sure no one ever f***s you.” Pain exploded in me, and I cried out and began clawing at my gown. Stabbed. He’d stabbed me over and over and over. So much pain—and I couldn’t fight back. He’d held me with his bond, and I’d just laid there and taken it. In an instant, the alpha was there, grabbing my hands. Terrified, I tried to jerk away, but he held fast. “f**k, stop it. We’re not here to hurt you. Just breathe. The doctor is on her way.” “The doctor is here,” a woman said as she walked in and stared at the scene before her. She was an older wolf with gray strands peppering her dark hair. Despite being a beta, she had that no-nonsense look of a healer. She gave that look to the alpha now through narrow eyes. “Alpha, you’re scaring my patient. Please step away from her.” He growled but released me, and I huddled in the corner of my bed. “If you could just give us some space,” the doctor began, only to be hustled further into the room as another alpha entered, blocked the doorway, and crossed his arms. She looked back and muttered something under her breath about alphas as she walked closer to me. “Hello,” she said in a gentle voice. “My name is Dr. Shriver. You’re at the Matterville Hospital. You had to have emergency surgery and an infusion of blood. There was no identification on you. Can you tell me your name?” I didn’t want to tell her anything, but her voice was soothing. I’d only met one other healer, and he’d been kind to me—not kind enough to help me escape, but his touch had been soothing when he’d bandaged my wounds. I glanced nervously at the other two alphas. “Fiona,” I answered quietly. “Fiona. Very good. Fiona, you were attacked in the woods not far from here. Do you remember that?” How the hell could I forget? He’d taken me there under the guise of helping me understand how to be an omega. I was automatically suspicious because he’d never shown me any kindness, but I’d been so tired of it all. I didn’t even know how to fight back. Slowly, I nodded. “Good. I didn’t see any head injuries, but you never know with traumatic experiences. Do you know who attacked you?” Danger, my wolf whispered. I agreed with her. He was still alive, and for the moment, I was free. If I dropped his name, it would leave a trail. Swallowing hard, I shook my head and hoped she didn’t know that I was lying. The doctor sighed. “An attack on any wolf is a serious business, but an attack on an omega is a whole different story. I was really hoping we could catch this guy. We’ll contact your alpha.” “N-no, you can’t!” I yelled before I knew what I was doing. She gave me an odd look, and I backtracked. “Dead. He's…dead” “Oh, you poor dear. I’m so sorry. I know how hard that is.” Grabbed my hand, she squeezed. “Luck is on your side now. You were found just in time. The alphas have covered your medical costs, so you don’t need to worry about that. I’m going to keep you here for a few more days for observation, but you’ve responded to the surgery very well. We’re just making sure that an infection doesn’t set in, okay?” I couldn’t even respond to her. A strange sensation was happening in my chest. A familiar one. A tug. The doctor turned as a man entered the room. She cleared her throat. “If you could please move.” The man grunted and stepped aside. He was blonde and just as tall as the large, dark-haired alpha, but his face was unmarked and classically handsome. I felt a strange sensation as I looked at them, but the odd tug in my chest took precedence. I hadn’t felt anything like it since the day I’d been sold. “Wait,” Nico growled. “Will she go into heat?” The doctor paused. “In this state? Highly unlikely. She’ll need to heal and get some more nutrients in her.” Great. Discussions about heat often happened around me, and I had no idea what they meant. The alphas left the room, and for the first time, I was alone. Quickly, I ripped the needles back out of my arm again. I wasn’t tethered to the bed, so slowly, I sat up and scooted to the edge. The tugging grew stronger. Gripping the railing of the bed, I stood. And wobbled. Escape was going to be a little more difficult than I thought. Gritting my teeth, I breathed deeply and took a step. And immediately pitched forward. A growl filled the room, and hands grabbed me before I hit the floor. Heat flooded my body, and I gasped and looked up. Dark eyes stared at me. Dark, familiar eyes. “You,” I whispered. The dark beard was longer than I remembered, but I would never forget those eyes. The way they’d connected to me. The way they’d rejected me. Hauling me up, the stranger placed me back on the bed. “What the f**k are you doing? Yesterday, you were nearly dead, and now you’re trying to run?” Something pulled me toward him, and I couldn’t form any coherent thoughts. I just needed to press my body against his, and I’d be just fine. He’d protect me. Instead, I found myself unable to move as he held me to the bed. “Don’t touch me,” he snarled as if he could read my thoughts. “Do you understand? Don’t ever touch me.” My gaze moved down to where he was touching me, and he snatched his hands back like he’d been burned. “But it’s you,” I said as if that should mean something to him. As if it should mean something to me. I was so confused. “You don’t know me,” he snarled and moved to the far side of the room. I didn’t contradict him, and we stared at each other. I should thank him. He and his alphas had saved my life, but from how he looked at me, I didn’t think he was happy about that. He looked like he abhorred me, but I’d never done anything to him. “I am going to ask you some questions. Outside of that, you are not to speak to me. Do you understand me?” Eyes wide, I nodded. “Where is your family?” That question didn’t bring the overwhelming pain that it used to. Instead, I just felt a little cold inside. “My parents are dead.” “Who is your alpha?” “Dead,” I lied. His nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply, and he narrowed his eyes. “Who was your last pack?” Damn it. I didn’t lie often, and I was terrible at it. “I...I don’t know.” “You don’t know?” he echoed flatly. “You’re going to have to do better than that.” I grasped at something reasonable. “The doctor said something about trauma affecting my memory.” “So you know your alpha is dead, but not who your pack is?” Scared, I nodded. His jaw worked back and forth as he studied me. “Who attacked you?” I shook my head. “I don’t know,” I lied again. Another snarl filled the room, and his eyes gleamed gold. His wolf was right there on the surface. Knowing just what kind of damage a wolf could do, I scrambled to the corner of my bed. “We saved you in those woods,” he said in a low voice. “We paid for your medical care. We’re absorbing your debt. Do you understand that?” Swallowing hard, I nodded. “I should walk away from here and leave you, but someone tried to kill you. It’s not in my nature to leave an omega in danger. More importantly, it’s not in my alphas’ nature, and I won’t put them through that. I want to make something very clear here, though. You’re not part of my pack. You’re not my omega. Do you understand? The second you go into heat, you’re gone.” Nervously, I wet my lips. It was time to tell him one truth. “I don’t know what that means.” “Of course not. You’ve been coddled your whole f*****g life. How could you fathom not being wanted?” he laughed dryly. I didn’t try to correct him. “This is what I’m offering you. We don’t trust omegas. We don’t want one. You don’t talk to me. You don’t seek me out. You will not like what happens if you even mention that you’ve seen me before. You’ll work for us and heal, and when you go into heat, you’ll find another pack to satisfy your needs. Got it?” I still didn’t understand, but I knew what would happen if you dared to ask an alpha the same thing twice. “You could just leave me here. I don’t want to be any trouble.” “Unfortunately, as I mentioned, we’ve paid tens of thousands of dollars to save you. You’ll work that off. At least, however much you can before your heat.” His gaze narrowed on mine. “And whatever you feel when I’m near? You don’t say a word to anyone about it. You f*****g ignore it or shut it down. Got it? And I won’t tell anyone that you’re another strung-out druggie chasing the black market auction.” “That’s not...” “Yes or no?” he thundered. It sounded like a choice, but it didn’t feel like one. Shriveling back, I nodded. “Good. Try to run, and I will catch you.” With that, he turned and stormed out of the room. When he left, he took almost all of my energy with him, and I sagged against the bed and took a deep breath. I had no idea what was happening to me, but I wasn’t near Talon, and that was a relief. I was definitely too weak to run, but if this alpha didn’t want to do anything with me, then he wouldn't be watching me twenty-four-seven. And I would be able to take advantage of that. “Fiona!” a familiar voice roared in my head. Flinching, I scrambled back to the bed. “How are you still alive, b***h? How can I still feel you?” Feel me. Even though I willed myself not to respond, it didn’t matter. Before, my thoughts would drift through the bond whether I wanted to or not, but Talon’s confusion and rage were evident. He was getting nothing from me. One thing I’d learned in my time with him was that he couldn’t hear me when he was too far away. “I will find you, b***h, and next time, nobody will save you.”
