Chapter 5

MAIA SOLIS The relief is latent and so is my disagreement. After questioning him, we remained silent. I stared at him and waited for my explanation. “I'm sorry. I had a problem and you saved me. I must say that my grandmother's team was perfect.: “Team? I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't know what's going on. And why the hell did you kiss me?” : What do you mean? Oh no!” He said running his hand through his hair. “You have no idea why Miss Sophia sent you here, do you?” I had no idea and I needed an explanation. “She said she would send someone who needed the job. I thought it was you.” The job? What job? “Yes, your grandmother sent me to do my job and that is to deliver flowers.” “One moment. Let's calm down and try to understand if she got it wrong.” “Something is missing.” I was sounding a little hysterical, but I didn't understand anything. His phone rings and distracts us. “Grandmother?” When I notice he's already on the phone and puts it on speakerphone. “Everything worked?” She says excitedly on the other side. “Mrs. Sophia, please explain to your grandson that we had a mix-up.” “Oh, darling. I forgot to say that Damon needed a favor.” “Did they mistreat you?” I cleared my throat, embarrassed to say that the treatment wasn't exactly bad. After all, Damon's soft lips kissed me. It's not the kind of thing that should be complained about. “Really Grandma?” “Let the girl talk.” “I'm confused, for God's sake! What specific service am I supposed to be giving?” “Simple, my dear. Be Damon's bride.” This is a joke. I punched myself twice and laughed heartily because I was quite sure this was a dream. Miss Sophia was silent, waiting for me to swallow her words. “Bride? Miss Sophia, you ordered a plant from me.” “My dear, I'm running late! Damon, explain everything to her and don't forget what we agreed!” “What? What did you agree? Explain what?” She hung up. “I think my grandmother tricked us both.” He said, taking a deep breath and pressing the base of his nose in frustration. “If she made you come here, I have to believe you're trustworthy, right?” “Of course I am!” I said indignantly. “Aren't you the type to sell information to journalists? Look, if it is, I'll know who leaked the news and I don't deal with that well.” The bastard threatened me. “Try threatening me again and you'll understand that I wouldn't even need to sell. All I had to do was run screaming down the hall and the almighty Damon would grab me without permission. “I am not! Look, let's calm down.” “I have a big business to do and for that I have to be seen as a family man, therefore engaged, married with children and all these things. I don't have a fiancée, so my grandmother went through everything and now you're here.” “This makes no sense. I know her and surely she would tell me something like that before putting me in the middle of this mess. Anyone who reads newspapers would not believe this story!” “Half is true and half is a lie, but that's not the point. Would you accept it if she approached you directly?” “Of course!” “She certainly knows this and left both of us with no option, probably because she believed you wouldn't take advantage of the situation. She's the type who still believes in people.” He said calmly. “ I have a choice! Where have you ever seen someone like that cornered?” “ You talk a lot.” He commented. “How did you know?” “What?” “That I was the person your grandmother sent?” “ I know Dona Sophia and I know that she wouldn't send anyone that Hidalgo or my grandfather would wait for.” “It could be the fern.” “What?: “The blonde, the lady a while ago.” “Like I said, I know Ms. Sophia. In her mind, you are the ideal choice precisely because you are not what anyone expects.” “ Isn't it better to choose the most obvious option?” “ People like to believe in the improbable. Why would Damon Fox change his behavior because of the obvious?” He questioned. “Well, since this madness is over, I'm going to pretend it was a dream and go back to the other side of town. “ “Impossible.” “I need your help and it's not that simple.” “ I have something to do, so see you next time!” I started to the door. “Wait!” He moved forward and prevented me from leaving. He moves closer and we are so close I forget my next words. “I'll pay! Stay for a few days and I'll pay you.” Really? So irrational. Who does he think I am? “I'm not a b***h!” “What?” “I'm not a prostitute, for God's sake!” “No! You misunderstood me. Okay, let's take it easy. I didn't say you were. I'm offering a contract. I hire you to provide non-s****l services for me.” “You just have to pretend to be my fiancée. A few days maybe, while I close the deal. Then we mess around a bit and say we separated due to incompatibility.” “Do you think they will believe that I am your fiancée?” “We will make it believable.” “We met through my grandmother, we've been together for a while and we got engaged. We kept secrets because the media can be…” “Cruel?” “Yes, cruel at times. To protect ourselves, we omit it.” “This is absurd!” “Hundred thousand.” “Hundred thousand what?” “A hundred thousand dollars. One hundred thousand dollars to pretend you're my fiancée for a few days. If it goes over a month, I'll double it.” One hundred thousand dollars. Offering such a large sum, this man has already lost all shred of sanity and I will probably have to call emergency services. “You must be crazy!”
