Chapter 3

MAIA SOLIS My life is a mess. My boyfriend just cheated on me and I just found out the flower shop run by me and my aunt is going bankrupt, and that we will soon be evicted.” As if that's not enough, I lost the waitress side job I was handling. A customer put his hands on him while I was attending to him. In annoyance, I threw a mug of beer at him and was fired. All I did was maintain my dignity. Our only source of income was on the verge of destruction. I couldn't watch my Aunt lose the shop. She's raised me since I can remember and it's not fair to have her go through so much difficulty. I feel like I failed her when I chose to invest in floriculture instead of going to college. I could work at a company now and have any traditional job that paid the bills. But no, I wanted to dream and the price was high. I sighed in frustration as the store bell rang. I opened the door to look and my eyes met an elegant blonde woman. From her stance and the way she carried herself, you would know she was rich. “Welcome,” I said. “How can I help you?” “I'm here to buy flowers, of course.” I ushered her in. “What are you looking for?” “Something that shows dedication. I want to be looked at and remembered every time.” “I suggest Hoya Kerry.” I pointed and looked at her. “Yes. It is strong, it survives the harshness of day, but it always remains alive.” “How about an orchid? I said. “It's for delivery. You deliver, don't you?” “We don't have a delivery person at the moment, but we can deliver.” “Excellent! It has to be 33 pm Not before or after.” “In whose name?” “To Damon Fox. It should read, "From your love" on the card. “Won't you write the card?” I said. “No need, what counts is the intention. I intend for him to understand the sender in a very different way.” I've heard one or two things about Damon Fox. He is the kind of womanizing man who is an inexhaustible source of news for the gossip newspapers. The paparazzi always knew even what he ate for breakfast. Daniel, my ex, had good intentions. He didn't have time to come to my house, meet my aunt or at least take me to the cinema, as he said he worked hard to guarantee me a future. Daniel's intentions were noble, but his actions destroyed me. He was the only person I thought I had a future with and now he is gone. I felt like an i***t for not realizing that being introduced to your boyfriend's family after years of dating was a bad sign. I should have been smart enough to know that to Daniel, I was just another girl to pass the time. The i***t was engaged and I'll never forget when I found a photograph of him and his bride on social media. When we were together, he complained about how he doesn't like social media and posting pictures of his private life. I should've known. I completely forgot about my customer and after writing the note, she left. I needed to call my aunt quickly and inform her of the delivery. “Hi, Auntie,” I said into the phone. “Hi, Maia.” “I'm sorry for calling at this time.” “What is it?” “We have to make a delivery and the customer asked for a specific time.” “Okay. Close the store and go do it. It will take me a while to return, I have to wait for the doctor's arrival.” My aunt has been sick for a while now, we don’t know the diagnosis yet but, we hope it isn't something terrible. Due to our low funds at the moment, she is visiting a government-owned hospital to lessen the expenses. “Okay.” I said, “I'll be quick. Take your time.” “Honey, everything's going to be okay. Now go, I love you, my dear.” I hung up the phone and stared at my gardening glove. The store bell rang and I got up, shaking off the dirt on my apron and cleaning my hands for service. “Miss Sophia!” I smiled the minute I opened the door. Miss Sophia has been a close friend of my aunt. “Hello, my dear. Is your aunt here?” The old woman asked. “No, she went to the doctor.” “Is she still in pain?” She asked in a concerned voice. Possibly, my aunt told her about her health condition. “Yes.” “She didn't feel well the last time we saw each other.” “When did she go?” “Saturday.” I sighed in frustration. “What brings you here?” “Flowers! My grandson's office is very boring and needs something natural and colorful.” “A plant would be best if he is not in the habit of taking care of it,” I suggested and showed the options. “Oh! This is heart-shaped.” She pointed to a plant and smiled. “Heart cactus, that's the name, but she's not exactly a cactus. I don't know if it's ideal for an office because it needs to be hung. If placed on a shelf, it'll be perfect.” “Well, someone will have to take care of it. Do you deliver?” “Yes, but our delivery man is unavailable at the moment so I'll be doing the delivery.” “I was on My way out for a delivery so I can drop your grandson's plant on my way.” “Perfect!” “Address, please?” I'm about to write the address down and I notice the similarity with the first order. “Is your grandson Damon Fox?” “Yes. How do you know?” “My other delivery is for him.” I point to the orchids. “Who placed those orders?” She asked. “A blonde girl, whose sender is “the love of her life”. “Of Course it is. You know what? Give the orchids to me?” “Why?” “No, you shouldn't be scared. I know who sent it and believe me, your flowers in this case will not make my grandson happy.” “But—” “No buts. Tell your aunt I'll see her later. See you around dear!” She said and walked away with the flower in hand. Sophia Fox is weird. What was going on? But as she paid, I obeyed, without knowing she would change my life.
