The Descent into the Abyss

The storm eased just enough for them to make their way to the hidden cave at the base of the cliffs. There, Kael revealed an opening half-submerged in water. “This is the passage,” he said. “It leads beneath Bayhand, into the heart of the sea. Few have ever gone, and none returned.” Liora’s pulse thundered in her ears, but she stepped into the freezing water. The tide pulled at her legs as though eager to claim her. With Kael’s lantern in hand, she ducked into the cave, the light flickering against walls slick with moss and barnacle. The passage narrowed, the water rising to her chest, then her throat. Just when she thought she would drown, it widened into a vast chamber beneath the waves. The air here was heavy, luminous, glowing with a pale blue light that seemed to pulse from the very stone. At the center of the cavern, the sea gathered itself—not as water, but as presence. A figure rose from the depths, formed of foam and shadow, its eyes endless and ancient. Liora froze, her body trembling with awe and terror. When it spoke, the voice was not sound but tide—a rolling command in her bones: The pact was broken. The debt remains. Blood for tide. Flesh for wave.
