Under the Red Dot

521 Words
Lin Xia’s fingers lingered on the laptop, the hidden folder open, her mind racing through every detail of Darius Chen’s communications. “You’re doing well,” he said, voice low, predatory, brushing near her ear. “But remember… only diamonds survive the heat.” Suddenly, the fluorescent lights above flickered violently, then went out. The office plunged into darkness. Lin Xia froze, heart thudding. A sharp red dot appeared on the glass of the floor-to-ceiling windows. It was small, distant—but unmistakable. A laser sight. Her pulse spiked. “Move!” he growled, grabbing her hand with iron strength. She barely had time to react before he pulled her into the shadow beneath the desk. His body pressed against hers, heat and authority combined, shielding her from view. “Stay absolutely still,” he whispered, voice dangerously calm. Cedar and tobacco clung to him, but now there was an edge—lethal, controlled. Outside, footsteps echoed in the corridor. Quick. Precise. Someone had entered the office. Lin Xia’s hands trembled, but she forced herself to focus. Her brain raced through every possible escape route, every piece of data she could use. He pressed a finger lightly against her arm. A subtle reminder of presence. Not comforting. Commanding. The red dot traced the window again, moving closer. Lin Xia’s breath caught. Every instinct screamed danger, but she also felt… alive. Terrified, yes—but alert in a way she hadn’t been before. “Who’s there?” a voice hissed from outside. The intruder’s tone was sharp, professional. Not a random thief. “He’s not letting us be seen,” Lin Xia whispered, adrenaline sharp in her voice. “He won’t,” he replied, his lips barely brushing her ear, warm and urgent. “But we need to move. Now.” In one fluid motion, he shifted her under the desk, pulling the chair to block their position, every move precise, calculated. Lin Xia could feel his heartbeat against her back. Strong. Controlled. Alive. The footsteps halted for a second, then retraced. The red dot disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. Lin Xia’s chest heaved. Her fingers still gripped the laptop, mind spinning. “Was that… a sniper?” He straightened slightly, keeping his hand lightly on her shoulder, guiding her upright. “Close enough. Someone wants to test you. Test me. Test us.” Her thoughts collided—danger, exhilaration, trust, tension. She realized that for the first time, the threats were no longer abstract. The danger was physical. Immediate. Real. He lowered his voice, predatory and intimate: “And Xia… the next move? We make it together. Or we don’t survive at all.” Lin Xia’s breath hitched. She swallowed hard, adrenaline mingling with something else—a recognition, a pulse of excitement she hadn’t felt in hours of office work. This was not just data anymore. This was life, death, and trust compressed into a single, breathless moment. Outside, the corridor was quiet. But Lin Xia knew: this was just the beginning. Someone had crossed the line. And now, she and he were on the front line, together.
