"Home isn't always a place. Sometimes it's the people who know your heart before you speak."
By late afternoon, the Morgan house had transformed.
Warm fairy lights stretched across the backyard fence, balloons swayed gently in the breeze, and the smell of grilled food drifted through the air. Olivia had spent most of the day making sure everything was perfect, while Daniel insisted he was "supervising," even though everyone knew he was mostly stealing pieces of chicken whenever he thought no one was looking.
"I saw that," Olivia called from the kitchen.
Daniel looked completely innocent.
"Saw what?"
"The chicken."
"I was quality testing."
"For the fourth time?"
"You can't rush perfection."
From the dining room, Henry laughed so hard he nearly dropped the stack of paper plates he was carrying.
"Dad, you're terrible."
"I'm experienced."
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"I finally know where I get it from."
Olivia didn't even look up.
"You definitely didn't get it from me."
Davi smiled quietly as she watched them.
The house buzzed with voices, footsteps, and the sound of relatives arriving one after another.
Normally...
This much noise would've made her retreat to her room.
Today was different.
These weren't strangers.
These were the people she'd known her whole life.
Their voices weren't overwhelming.
They were familiar.
Comforting.
It reminded her that home wasn't quiet because it was silent.
It was quiet because it felt safe.
The doorbell rang again.
"I'll get it!" Henry shouted.
"No running!" Olivia called after him.
"I'm walking quickly!"
"You are literally running!"
Henry opened the front door with his usual enthusiasm.
"Aya!"
Aya held up a neatly wrapped gift.
"Happy birthday, birthday people."
"You brought a present?"
"No, it's a microwave."
Henry blinked.
"...Really?"
Aya waited three seconds before laughing.
"No, genius."
"I knew that."
"You absolutely didn't."
"I was testing you."
"Sure."
Davi appeared in the hallway just in time to hear the end of the conversation.
"You failed the test," she said.
Henry sighed dramatically.
"I feel attacked in my own home."
Aya grinned.
"As you should."
Not long after, another knock came at the door.
Henry didn't even have to look through the window.
"Ethan!"
He pulled the door open.
"Took you long enough."
"I said five o'clock."
"It's five-oh-two."
"You counted?"
"You know I did."
Ethan smiled and stepped inside, carrying a small gift bag in one hand.
Olivia greeted him warmly.
"Happy birthday to our unofficial third child."
"Thanks, Mrs. Morgan."
Daniel appeared from the living room.
"Good. Now there's someone else to help Henry carry chairs."
Henry looked offended.
"Why me?"
"Because you volunteered."
"I don't remember volunteering."
"You were born into it."
Ethan chuckled.
"I'll help."
Together, the two boys carried chairs into the backyard, arguing over who had the easier job.
Davi watched them from the hallway.
Henry was talking so much that Ethan barely had a chance to answer.
Yet somehow...
They understood each other perfectly.
It made her smile.
As the evening settled in, more guests arrived.
Music played softly through the speakers.
Children ran around the yard playing games while adults talked beneath strings of warm lights.
Aya found Davi standing near the garden.
"There you are."
"I needed a minute."
Aya nodded.
"I figured."
She didn't ask why.
She never did.
Instead, she stood beside her, watching the sunset paint the sky orange and pink.
After a while, Aya spoke.
"You know..."
"Hm?"
"You've got that look."
"What look?"
"The 'I'm socially exhausted but pretending I'm fine' look."
Davi laughed.
"I have a look for that?"
"Oh, absolutely."
"I should be worried."
"You should be impressed."
They both laughed.
"I'll be okay," Davi said quietly.
"I know."
Aya smiled.
"You always are."
Inside, Henry's voice echoed through the house.
"Davi!"
She looked toward the door.
"What?"
"Come here!"
"Why?"
"Because I said so!"
She raised an eyebrow.
"That's not a reason."
"It is if I'm the birthday boy."
"We have the same birthday."
"Exactly."
"So I'm also the birthday girl."
Henry paused dramatically.
"...I've made a terrible mistake."
Aya burst into laughter.
"You walked right into that one."
"I really did."
Later that evening, everyone gathered around the cake.
Seventeen candles flickered gently.
The room grew quiet.
Daniel wrapped one arm around Henry's shoulder.
Olivia rested a hand on Davi's back.
"Ready?" Daniel asked.
The twins exchanged a glance.
"As we'll ever be," Henry answered.
Everyone began singing.
Davi looked around the room.
Her parents.
Aya.
Henry.
Ethan.
People who had watched them grow from children into teenagers.
For a brief moment...
Everything felt exactly as it should.
After the applause faded and the candles were blown out, Henry leaned closer to Davi.
"Our promise?"
She smiled.
"Our promise."
They quietly linked their little fingers beneath the table, hidden from everyone else.
Every birthday since they were children, they'd made one promise to each other.
Not because they had to.
Because it reminded them that no matter how much life changed...
They'd always be family.
"What are you two whispering about?" Aya asked suspiciously.
"Trade secret," Henry replied.
"Top secret," Davi added.
Aya folded her arms.
"I don't like secrets."
Henry grinned.
"Good."
A few minutes later, while everyone was distracted by dessert and conversation, Davi slipped quietly onto the back porch.
The cool evening air wrapped around her.
She breathed deeply.
One minute.
That was all she needed.
The porch door opened softly behind her.
Without turning around, she smiled.
"Henry... I said I'd be back in a minute."
A quiet voice answered instead.
"It's not Henry."
She turned.
Ethan stood there, one hand tucked into his pocket, the small gift bag still in the other.
"I figured you might want your present before Henry tries to guess what it is."
Davi laughed softly.
"That's... probably a good idea."
He held out the bag.
"Happy birthday."
She accepted it carefully.
"Thank you."
Neither of them rushed to fill the silence.
The house behind them echoed with laughter.
Out here...
The world felt still.
Comfortable.
Home.
