Chapter 7:Like A Maid

1276 Words
I didn’t want to believe it. I did not want to believe I came here to work like a damn maid. Knowing that I would have to sleep with the King was already a pain, why would I have to help the servants cook, clean, and assist the Queen? I was a concubine in exchange for the treaty. Concubine! Not to mention I was the future mother of this clan’s heir, too. That should mean something big! “Miss Eve, you don’t have to do this.” Lilienne tried to get the mop from my hand, but I dodged it. “Believe me, Lilienne. I also don’t want to do this.” I shook my head, before I continued mopping. Lilienne, the other servant named Karen, and I were cleaning near the stairs. We just finished cooking, washing the dishes, and eating. Thought it was the only thing I had to do, but it turned out I also had to do the servants’ routine and work with them, literally. The Queen wasn’t just exagerrating when she said I had a lot of things to do. Because after this, I also have to wash the Queen’s clothes, clean the third floor, the attic, and then prepare for the Queen’s bath. Just thinking about it tired me out. “You can just rat out the Queen, Miss Eve,” Karen stopped for a moment. “If you tell the King, you’d be saved.” That was probably true. Seeing how the King treated me yesterday night, he probably would do anything in his power to stop the Queen. But that would hurt her more. ‘Why do you care about her, Eve? She’s a bitch.’ It was Lexi. ‘You shouldn’t be concerning yourself with shallow creature like her.’ I know. I know I shouldn’t. But if I tell the King, I’d feel like I would regret it. I’d definitely feel more like a mistress then. Someone who have ruined relationship, and for someone who was raised as a decent wolf, I didn’t want that. “She’s right, Miss Eve.” Lilienne second the mention. “You need to tell the King, before it worsen.” “Is there something more worse than this?” I asked. “The last one esaped because of this very reason,” Karen said. “Miss Eve, there was also one before you. Vera Condil from the Western pack, but unlike you, she was bought and not traded. The King has been wanting an heir, and since the Queen is infertile, the King chose Miss Vera to be his concubine to have his baby.” There was one before me? It caught my attention. Perplexity filled my eyes as I put my attention solely in Karen. I was astounded, and curious. “Western Pack… a wolf?” “Yes.” There was one before me. Which obviously meant this wasn’t the first time. But why would she choose a wolf and not a Lycan? It couldn’t be coincidence. At the same type, if he had a thing for female wolves, he would have had to marry one. So, why? “What happens after she escaped?” “She committed suicide. She must have realized the King’s influence as soon as she’s immediately found, but before she was taken here, she took her own life with a dagger.” “Did the King know the reason why?” “Probably.” Karen shrugged. “We didn’t know the specific details. We were servants, and we were never allowed to have a casual conversation with them.” It was a given. But still, it was horrible. So the woman before me was also tormented? By the Queen? Just how much humiliation and suffering did she inflict on her for her to commit suicide? ‘s**t,’ Lexi cursed. ‘That woman is crazy.’ Did Declan know? Surely, he wasn’t dumb enough to remain cluless, right? He must have felt inquisitive after it happened… “The Queen is coming, hurry!” Karen said that disrupted my thoughts. I moved and went back to what I was doing. I waited until she could walked passed us, and the moment she did, I followed her with my gaze. My mind continued to pondered, and it was there I started to have an internal battle with myself. It was true that I cared about her feelings, but I wasn’t sure that I could be selfish enough to protect her and not myself. I wasn’t heartless… but I wasn’t selfless either. The rest of the day, I followed the servants’ routine and worked hard. I served the Queen, and helped the others, until there weren’t any more work left. I was exhausted and drained that the moment I slouched at the chair in my room, I couldn’t lift back myself anymore. I couldn’t even go even when I felt hungry. I was dead tired, and I haven’t been this worn out since the day I first tried to join the pack run. My arms were hurting, and my legs were feeble. “Miss Eve?” I heard Lilienne’s voice outside the room before she knocked a few times. “Miss Eve? The dinner is ready.” I opened my eyes a little. “Please come inside, Lilienne…” I didn’t think I’d still be able to make it out. Beside the tiredness, I also didn’t want to see the Queen. The King may have arrived, but after hearing from Karen and Lilienne, I fear the Queen more than I did the first time we exchanged glances. She did not only have authority here. She was also basically capable of committing murder, and get away with it. In this place, she rule and someone with the likes of me can’t change that. The door slowly opened. Lilienne, clad in her uniform, approach me with a worried look in her face. She immediately went to me to help me. “Are you okay, Miss Eve? Is your head hurting? You look pale and exhausted.” That’s because I am. “Please tell the King that I already ate…” I said with a weary voice. “I’m tired and I have no appetite to consume.” I stood up from my seat with Lilienne’s support. We went to the bed, and Lilienne helped me with the placement of my pillow, and thick blanket. Her eyes were screaming genuine uneasiness. “But you haven’t. You will starve, Miss Eve.” I shook my head. Right now, starving was better than seeing the Queen. “I am not.” “No, you can’t sleep without eating.” Lilienne played with her fingers. “I’ll get bread and milk. Surely, the King will allow that.” My dried lips cracked when I let out a small, thin, smile. Enough to show my appreciation. “Alright.” Lilienne nodded. “Don’t sleep yet and wait for me.” She turned around. I watched her take her steps and leave. I heaved a deep breath. Lilienne was sure kind and responsible to her job. She wasn’t just simply a servant. That said… she might get involve if we build a more deep connection. Based on what I heard, The Queen was more than willing to do anything to put his husband’s women away from him. That includes tormenting, and mentally killing them. She’d more likely try a new method that would work best… and if it came down to it, now that Lilienne’s close to me, it wouldn’t be surprising if she’d also take her on her side. I need to tell this to my father, immediately.
