Chapter 6: Behind His Back

1129 Words
My heart contorted. I didn’t know if he was playing games with me, or he was flirting even though he didn’t look like it, but I was taken aback. I felt… conscious. I backed down immediately. Fell silent, and dealt with the lump on my throat. I didn’t know what to respond. I mean, what did he mean when he said I was what he wanted? Why? How? I didn’t even know his face until last week. I didn’t meet him until then. Certainly, he was the same, so how? I wasn’t able to answer him. “About our schedule, let’s make it Saturday and Sunday,” he said when I failed to respond for the next seconds. It was probably what he wanted to talk about. Our schedule set-up. “Monday and Saturday, Declan.” I suggested, remembering what Devra said. “Let’s do it on Mondays and Saturdays.” I disliked the Queen’s behavior a while ago. I was sure she knew this wasn’t my decision, but my father and Declan. I understood where she was coming from, but it was unfair on my part. Regardless, she had the right to feel like that because she was the wife. Declan was her husband, and it was valid that she was feeling those things. Thank the Moon Goddess she wasn’t here to hear what Declan just said. “Monday and Saturday?” He asked. “Why?” “No reason.” I relaxed my shoulder. “Would that be all? I want to rest now…” “Yes…” He responded in a soft and calm manner. “Monday and Saturday it is, then.” I nodded my head and stood up. “Thank you for guiding me here.” His lips curved a little into a small smile. “I’ll go now. If you need anything, you may call Lilienne.” I returned his smile, before I stood up. I fixed my posture, and waited for him to turn around so I could walk him until the door. Something was still on my chest, but I carried it out well just until he finally stepped out. ‘What was that?’ asked Lexi as soon as I shut the door closed. ‘He said he wanted you. It didn’t seem like a bluff.’ ‘I don’t know, Lexi. He probably just made it up to stop me from asking further,’ I said. I walked towards my closet, and opened it. My dresses and other garments were already there. Lilienne probably put it all here before she woke me up. But where were the clothes Declan bought? ‘Isn’t Declan so manly and attractive?’ Lexi asked, teasing me. ‘Come on, admit it.’ ‘Stop trying to link me with a married man, Lexi.’ ‘You’re already linked to him.’ I felt Lexi smirked. ‘You’re already tied to him, Eve.’ I picked random clothes that I thought were comfortable sleepwear, and changed there and then without worrying if someone would come in. I put my worn clothes on the coat rack stand and jumped in to my bed. I didn’t want to come out and call Lilienne, so I’d probably just ask her to get it tomorrow. ‘It made your heart raced. I felt it.’ Lexi continued to bug me. ‘What in the world, I never thought Lycans are capable of being attractive.’ ‘Only in their human form. They look disgusting in their Lycan form, Lexi.’ I countered. ‘And please, stop.’ ‘You’re just in denial.’ She giggled. ‘Can’t wait to see him again tomorrow.’ I breathed hard in Lexi’s remark. I lied down comfortably. I covered my body with the thick blanket, and positioned myself properly. It was a long day for me. Though I was just in the carriage, I was dead tired even when I have already slept. I shut my eyes tight and forced myself to snooze. It was a good thing Lexi didn’t say any more after that. In the next seconds, my breathing became heavy. I felt tiredness all over my body, until I completely lost consciousness. The next morning, I woke up with loud knocks coming from outside the door. I immediately thought it was my mother who’d ask me to eat with them, until it sinked in to me and I remembered I wasn’t in our territory anymore. I sat and looked at the door with my eyes open. I yawned, before I went out of the bed with my white night dress. I walked straight to the table in front of the mirror to get my brush, before I headed at the door. “Who is it, Lilienne?” My brows sloped when I asked. I was still sleepy then. I started brushing my hair. When I reached the door, I pulled it to create enough space. I was expecing my servant. But instead, I saw the Queen, Devra with a blue dress and light make up. She was up early…. she was dolled up early. “Good Morning, Your Highness.” I lowered down my head a little. “May I ask what it is that brought you here?” “You’re helping in the kitchen, Eve,” she said with a straight face. “Go and fixed yourself. You have a lot of things to do.” Confusion wrapped my face. “Pardon me?” “Did you not hear me?” She raised a brow. “You have a lot of things to do, Ms. Lamperogue. Or did you think you’re going to live lavishly here?” My hand fell. I didn’t understand until I met her face and we had eye-contact for seconds. What happened yesterday night flashed in my mind and it automatically lightened me up. The Queen was indeed on planning of giving me burden. I knew I said I understand, but how childish could she be? “I apologize. But you might have misunderstand, Your Highness. I am not a servant your husband bought—” “Believe me, Ms. Lamperogue. I perfectly understand. But whilst your only duty to the King is to sleep with him, and have his heir, your duty in this mansion is to serve me.” She narrowed her eyes at me as her lips protruded. “Your duty is to listen, and obey my orders.” Obey her orders? Is she crazy? She woke me up this early in the morning to tell me that as I live here, I also have to serve her like a maid? This wasn’t in the agreement! “You highness—” She cut me off, again. “I don’t want to hear any complains, Genevieve. Work. Otherwise, there’ll be no food for you.”
