CHAPTER 13 The bucket of the mechanical digger thudded into the soft earth and clawed up another huge clump of soil. Inside the cab the operator manipulated the controls with the aplomb of a concert pianist making the machine dance to his tune. The arm of the digger swung around and the contents of the bucket were dropped into a waiting skip. The swimming pool was Grant’s birthday present to himself. It had caused an argument with Jill. She didn’t want it and said it would be a five minute wonder which wouldn’t be used. Grant thought differently. It would save him going to his gym every time he wanted to swim and besides, it would be great for the children and good for parties, the first of which was going to be for his fortieth birthday.
