The Thing That Knows My Name

“Run.” Kael’s voice was low. Controlled. Deadly. It should have made me move. It didn’t. Because whatever stood in the shadows of the Veilwood— It wasn’t something you ran from. It was something you felt. Deep in your bones. Like the forest itself had taken shape and decided to watch. --- It stepped forward. Slowly. Deliberately. And the world seemed to bend around it. The air thickened, pressing against my skin like invisible hands. The trees whispered, their branches trembling as though they recognised something ancient—something that had returned after a long absence. My breath caught. It looked… human. Almost. Tall. Cloaked in shadows that didn’t quite match the light around it. Its face was obscured, not by darkness, but by something else—something that refused to be seen clearly. And its eyes— They glowed. Silver. Just like the woman in my vision. My heart stuttered. “No…” I whispered. The bond reacted instantly. Not with pain. With recognition. --- “Elara.” The voice wasn’t spoken aloud. It echoed inside my head. Soft. Familiar. Wrong. My body went rigid. Kael’s grip on my arm tightened. “Don’t listen to it.” “I didn’t—” My voice faltered. “I didn’t hear anything.” “You did,” he said grimly. “I can see it on your face.” The figure stepped closer. And the closer it came— The harder it became to breathe. “You shouldn’t be here,” Kael said, his voice dropping into something darker, more dangerous. The figure tilted its head slightly. As if considering him. Then— It ignored him. Completely. Its gaze locked onto me. And everything else faded. --- “You remember.” The words echoed in my mind again. Not a question. A statement. I swallowed hard. “I don’t know what you are,” I said, forcing the words out. “Or what you want.” The figure didn’t respond immediately. Instead, it lifted one hand. Slowly. And the air around us shifted. The ground beneath my feet trembled. The trees leaned inward. Watching. Listening. Waiting. Kael moved in front of me instantly, his body tense, his presence sharp and lethal. “You don’t get to touch her,” he warned. The figure paused. For the first time— It acknowledged him. A flicker of something passed through the air. Not quite emotion. Not quite interested. But enough. “You cannot stop what she is becoming.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “I can try.” A quiet pause. Then— “You will fail.” --- The words hit harder than any threat. Because there was no anger behind them. No malice. Just certainty. And that— That was far more terrifying. --- The bond pulsed again. Violently. I gasped, my body jerking forward before I could stop myself. “Elara!” Kael’s voice cut through the moment. But it was too late. Because this time— I didn’t fight it. --- The pull was stronger than anything I had ever felt. Stronger than fear. Stronger than logic. Stronger than him. My feet moved. One step. Then another. “Elara, stop.” Kael’s voice was sharp now, commanding. But it didn’t matter. Because the bond wasn’t pulling me toward him anymore. It was pulling me toward— That. --- “What are you doing?” I whispered, my voice barely my own. The figure didn’t answer. It didn’t need to. Because I could feel it. The connection. Not like the bond. Something older. Deeper. Like roots buried beneath the surface, stretching further than I could see. “You belong to the Veilwood.” The words echoed through me. And something inside me— Answered. --- “No,” Kael snapped, stepping forward. “She belongs to no one.” The figure’s gaze flickered to him again. “You misunderstand,” it said. Then it looked back at me. “She belongs to herself.” My breath hitched. And for a split second— Something inside me stilled. --- “What… are you?” I asked. The question felt small. Insignificant. But it was all I had. The figure tilted its head again. Then— “I am what remains.” That didn’t help. At all. --- The bond surged again. But this time— It wasn’t just the bond. It was the power. It rose inside me, uncontained, unrestrained, spilling into every part of me like something that had been waiting far too long to be free. My hands trembled. My pulse raced. “I can’t control it,” I whispered. “You were never meant to control it,” the figure said. “Then what am I supposed to do?” I demanded. The answer came without hesitation. “Accept it.” --- The ground shook. Hard. Kael swore under his breath. “That’s not happening.” But the forest— It didn’t care what he wanted. --- The air split. Not visibly. But I felt it. Like something had been torn open. And through that tear— Memories flooded in. --- Fire. Screams. Blood. A child crying— Me. Hands pulling me away. A voice shouting— “Take her! Before they find her!” Another voice— “They’re already here—!” The sound of wolves. Not like the ones I knew. Stronger. Wilder. Something else entirely. And then— Darkness. --- I staggered, the memories crashing into me all at once. “No—stop—” But they didn’t stop. They kept coming. Faster. Sharper. More real. --- A woman kneeling in front of me. Her hands on my face. Her eyes— Silver. “Elara,” she whispered. “Listen to me.” My breath hitched. “Mom?” I whispered. The word felt foreign. Unfamiliar. But it fit. It felt right. --- “They will come for you,” she said. “And when they do—you must remember who you are.” “I don’t understand—” “You will.” Her grip tightened. “You are not weak. You are not small. You are—” The memory shattered. --- I gasped, collapsing to my knees. The forest spun around me, the weight of everything pressing down at once. “Elara!” Kael was there instantly, his hands gripping my shoulders. “Stay with me.” “I—” My voice broke. “I saw—” “I know,” he said tightly. “That’s what it does.” “What does?” I demanded. But he didn’t answer. Because the figure— It had moved closer. Far too close. --- “Your past is returning,” it said. Kael’s body tensed. “Back away.” The figure ignored him. “Your power is awakening.” “I didn’t ask for this!” I snapped. “No,” it agreed. “But it was always yours.” The truth of that settled deep. Heavy. Unavoidable. --- “What do you want from me?” I asked. The figure paused. Then— “To guide you.” Kael’s grip tightened. “She doesn’t need your guidance.” “She cannot survive without it.” Silence fell. Because neither of them was wrong. --- The bond pulsed again. But now— It felt different. Not just between me and Kael. But between me and— Everything. The forest. The air. The power beneath the ground. It was all connected. And I was in the centre of it. --- “What happens if I don’t accept this?” I asked. The figure didn’t hesitate. “You break.” A chill ran down my spine. “And if I do?” Its silver gaze held mine. “You become.” --- The word echoed in my mind. Become. Something more. Something dangerous. Something I didn’t understand. --- Kael stepped in front of me again. “We’re leaving.” The figure didn’t move. “You cannot take her from here,” it said. “Watch me.” The tension snapped. --- The forest reacted. Violently. The ground split beneath our feet, roots tearing through the earth like living things as the air filled with a low, humming sound that made my bones ache. “Kael—” I started. But it was too late. --- The power surged. Not just in me. Everywhere. Uncontrolled. Unstoppable. --- “Elara!” Kael’s voice cut through the chaos. “Fight it!” “I don’t know how!” “Then trust me!” The words hit harder than they should have. Because trusting him— That was the one thing I wasn’t sure I could do. Not anymore. Not after everything. --- The ground shook again. Stronger. Cracks spread beneath us, the earth splitting open as something deep below began to rise. Something ancient. Something powerful. Something— Alive. --- “What is that?” I whispered. Kael didn’t answer. Because he didn’t know. And that— That was the most terrifying part. --- The figure stepped back slightly. Not afraid. Just… watching. “Your awakening has begun,” it said. My heart pounded. “What does that mean?” Its gaze didn’t waver. “It means there is no going back.” --- The ground beneath me gave way. I screamed as I fell— Straight into the darkness below. --- “Elara!” Kael’s voice echoed after me. Fading. Distant. Gone. --- And as the darkness swallowed me whole— The last thing I heard— Was the voice in my mind. Soft. Familiar. Waiting. “Welcome home.” --- Elara has fallen into the depths of the Veilwood—alone, awakening, and closer to her true power than ever before. But what exactly is waiting for her in the darkness?
