The Blood They Came For

1558 Words
The first rogue lunged for me before anyone could react. I didn’t even see him move—just a blur of claws and teeth tearing through the air straight for my throat. Then something slammed into me. Hard. I hit the ground, the breath knocked violently from my lungs as a heavy body shielded mine. The impact sent pain shooting up my spine, but I barely registered it over the chaos erupting around us. “Stay down!” Kael’s voice. Sharp. Commanding. Furious. The rogue’s claws sliced through the space where my head had been seconds ago, missing me by inches. A guttural snarl ripped from his throat as he redirected his attack—straight at Kael. And Kael didn’t dodge. He met it. Head-on. --- The sound of impact was sickening. Bone against bone. Flesh-tearing. Power colliding. Kael caught the rogue mid-lunge, his hand wrapping around the wolf’s throat with brutal precision. For a moment, they struggled—muscle against muscle, dominance against desperation. Then Kael squeezed. A c***k echoed through the clearing. The rogue went limp. My stomach twisted as Kael tossed the body aside like it weighed nothing. “Inside!” he barked, his eyes flashing toward me. “Now!” But I couldn’t move. Not because I didn’t want to. Because I couldn’t. The bond— It was burning. --- Pain exploded in my chest, so intense it stole the air from my lungs. I gasped, curling inward as the sensation ripped through me like wildfire. It wasn’t just pain anymore—it was something deeper. Something ancient. Something… awake. “Elara!” Kael’s voice sounded distant, distorted, like I was underwater. My vision blurred. And then— I saw them. Not the rogues. Not the wolves. Something else. Flashes. Images that didn’t belong to me. A forest—older, darker, alive with something powerful. A woman standing at its centre, her eyes glowing with silver light. Blood dripping from her hands. Wolves bowing around her. A voice—soft, but echoing through my mind. “You were never meant to be hidden.” My breath hitched. “What—what is this?” I whispered. The vision shattered. Reality crashed back in. And everything was worse. --- “Elara, look at me!” Kael’s hands gripped my shoulders, pulling me upright. His face was tense, his eyes searching mine with something dangerously close to panic. “What’s happening to you?” “I—I don’t know—” My voice broke as another wave of pain hit me. “It hurts—” His expression darkened. The bond pulsed again. Stronger. Unstable. “They triggered it,” he muttered under his breath. “What?” But before he could answer— A roar tore through the clearing. Not Kael. Not Torin. Something bigger. Something worse. --- The rogues weren’t fighting like normal wolves. They weren’t attacking randomly. They were pushing forward. Focused. Relentless. And their target— Was still me. “Move!” Kael snapped. This time, my body obeyed. He dragged me to my feet, his grip tight around my wrist as he pulled me toward the edge of the clearing. “Where are we going?” I asked, stumbling to keep up. “Somewhere they can’t reach you.” “That doesn’t sound reassuring!” “It’s not supposed to.” Another rogue charged at us. Kael didn’t even slow down. He shifted mid-stride, his body twisting violently as bone cracked and fur erupted from his skin. One second he was human— The next— He was something else entirely. Massive. Terrifying. Unstoppable. His wolf was bigger than any I had ever seen, black as night with eyes that burned like molten gold. The rogue didn’t stand a chance. Kael tore through him with brutal efficiency, blood spraying across the ground as he didn’t even break pace. I stared, frozen for half a second. And that was my mistake. --- A hand grabbed me from behind. I screamed as I was yanked backwards, my feet leaving the ground as a rogue dragged me into the shadows. “Well, well,” a low voice snarled in my ear. “Found you.” Panic exploded in my chest. I struggled, kicking and clawing, but his grip was iron. “Let me go!” “Not a chance,” he laughed, his breath hot and foul against my skin. “You’re worth too much.” Worth? “What are you talking about?” I demanded, fear lacing my voice. “You really don’t know?” he said mockingly. “That makes this even better.” My stomach dropped. “Know what?” He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “What you are.” --- A deafening snarl shook the ground. The rogue barely had time to react before something massive slammed into him. Kael. His wolf. Fury incarnate. The impact sent us both crashing to the ground, the rogue’s grip finally breaking as I rolled away, gasping for air. Kael didn’t hesitate. He attacked. Claws. Teeth. Rage. It wasn’t a fight. It was a s*******r. The rogue barely lasted seconds before Kael ripped his throat out, blood pooling beneath them. Silence followed. Heavy. Breathing hard, I pushed myself up, my body shaking as I stared at the scene. Kael turned toward me slowly. His wolf’s eyes locked onto mine. And for a moment— I wasn’t scared. Not of him. Because beneath the violence, beneath the power— There was something else. Something protective. Something… possessive. The bond pulsed again. And this time— It didn’t hurt. It burned. --- Kael shifted back, his human form returning with controlled precision. “Are you hurt?” he demanded, stepping toward me. I shook my head, still trying to steady my breathing. “No.” But my voice betrayed me. I wasn’t okay. Not even close. “They said something,” I added quickly. “The rogue—he said I was ‘worth too much.’ What does that mean?” Kael’s expression hardened. “I told you,” he said. “You’re a target.” “That’s not enough,” I snapped. “I need the truth.” For a moment, it looked like he might refuse again. Then— Another howl echoed through the forest. Closer. More of them. Kael cursed under his breath. “We don’t have time for this.” “Make time,” I shot back, my voice shaking but firm. “Because I’m not running blind anymore.” His gaze locked onto mine. Intense. Measuring. And then— “Fine,” he said. My heart pounded. “You’re not just a healer,” he continued. “And you’re not just an Omega.” “I figured that part out already.” His jaw tightened. “You’re the last descendant of the Bloodline.” The word hit me like a physical blow. “Bloodline?” I repeated. He nodded once. “An ancient line of wolves who weren’t just wolves,” he said. “They were something more. Stronger. Connected to magic in a way no one else was.” My mind raced. The visions. The power. The voice. “That’s impossible,” I whispered. “They were wiped out centuries ago,” Kael continued, ignoring me. “Hunted. Erased.” A cold chill spread through me. “Then how am I—” “Alive?” he finished. Our eyes met. And something in his expression shifted. “You shouldn’t be.” --- The words settled between us like a death sentence. I swallowed hard. “That’s not exactly comforting.” “It’s not meant to be.” Another crash echoed nearby. The fight wasn’t over. Not even close. Kael grabbed my arm again, pulling me toward the deeper forest. “We need to move. Now.” “Where?” “The Veilwood.” My heart skipped. “That place is forbidden.” “Exactly.” I hesitated. Every instinct in my body screamed that this was a bad idea. But staying here? That was worse. “Fine,” I said. “Let’s go.” We didn’t make it far. Because the moment we crossed into the tree line— They were waiting. --- Three rogues stepped out of the shadows. Stronger. Bigger. More dangerous than the others. And unlike the rest— These weren’t smiling. They were serious. Focused. Hunters who had finally cornered their prey. “Well,” one of them said, his voice calm and cold. “That saves us the trouble of searching.” Kael stepped in front of me instantly. Protective. Dominant. Lethal. “You’re not taking her,” he said. The rogue tilted his head slightly, studying him. “That’s where you’re wrong, Alpha.” The air shifted. Heavy. Charged. “Because we’re not here to take her,” he continued. My stomach dropped. “Then what do you want?” I demanded. The rogue’s gaze flicked to me. And for the first time— I saw it. Recognition. Not curiosity. Not confusion. Certainty. “We’re here,” he said slowly, “to bring her home.” -- The rogues don’t just want Elara—they claim she belongs with them. What is “home”… and why does it feel more dangerous than anything she’s ever known?
