ADRIAN (Part 3)

The city never truly slept, but tonight it seemed quieter, almost respectful, as if it sensed the storm I was carrying inside. Sophia lay beside me, still wrapped in the warmth of my embrace, her fingers tangled in my hair, and I could feel the pulse of her heart against my chest. My body ached for her even after the hours we spent together. There was no relief in her closeness, only a deeper hunger, I traced my fingers along her spine, memorizing the curve of her body as though committing it to memory, and I found myself growling low, a sound meant more for her than anyone else. She shifted under my touch, a soft shiver running through her, and I knew she felt it too, the tension, the heat, the claim of ownership I pressed into every movement, “You’re thinking again,” she whispered, her voice low, teasing, yet vulnerable, “Always,” I admitted, brushing her hair back to reveal her face, “You’re never far from my mind, Sophia, not for a moment,” Her eyes met mine, wide and searching, and I saw the mixture of trust and fear swimming there. I wanted to protect her, to crush every threat before it reached her, yet every touch, every brush of her skin against mine, reminded me that she was mine in a way that went beyond territory or instinct, “I don’t need to worry,” she said, resting her forehead against mine, “I trust you,” Her trust was a dangerous thing, more potent than any weapon Marcus could wield. It gave me strength, but it also made her a target. My wolf stirred inside me, restless, hungry, and I pressed my lips to her temple, swallowing the ache that always followed when I let myself feel too much, “You have to be careful,” I murmured, “Marcus isn’t patient, and he’s clever. He sees every weakness, and right now, you are mine, which means he’ll use everything he can against me,” She shivered, but not from fear. Her hands clutched my chest, holding me in place as if she could anchor me to her, “Then let him try,” she whispered, defiance lacing the words, I growled softly in response, pride and possessiveness coiling tight around my heart. She dared me to protect her, dared me to claim her even more fully, and I couldn’t resist. I kissed her, deep and consuming, letting the raw need for her slide over every careful thought. My hands roamed over her body with possessive reverence, memorizing, claiming, tasting, Her breath hitched, a sound that made my wolf stir like wildfire. She arched into me, and I let instinct guide my movements, slow and deliberate, hard and demanding. Every brush of skin, every gasp, every tiny tremble became a declaration, she belonged to me in ways no one else ever would, and I would make sure of it, Yet even in that intensity, my mind could not rest. Between each motion, each shiver, each sigh, I mapped strategies, calculated moves, considered every possibility. Marcus had been circling, probing, sending whispers through the underworld. Every time he thought he’d found a crack, I’d been one step ahead. But now, with Sophia in my life, the stakes were higher. She was not just my weakness, she was my leverage, and that made the game deadly, I pulled back slightly, holding her face in my hands, letting my eyes drink her in, “Listen to me,” I said, my voice rough with need and authority, “I can’t let anyone touch you, Sophia. Not Marcus, not his men, not anyone. You have to trust me,” “I do,” she said, voice firm, “But I need to know you’ll fight for me, even when I can’t see it,” Her words struck deep, because part of me wanted to keep her at arm’s length, to shield her from the blood and claws of my world. But another part, the part that burned whenever she touched me, knew she’d never accept being protected from the sidelines, “I’ll try,” I said, it was the closest to a promise I could give, She kissed me then, slow and lingering, and for a moment the weight lifted. But when she pulled away, her eyes searched mine, as if she already knew the truth, The storm was coming, and no matter how tightly I held her, I couldn’t promise it wouldn’t swallow us both, The quiet that followed was almost dangerous. For a while, all I heard was her breathing against my chest, soft and steady, as if the world had melted away. I should have taken comfort in it, but unease clawed at me. I couldn’t ignore the fact that my enemies would use her against me if they knew what she meant. And she meant more than I dared to admit, Sophia stirred, tilting her head to look at me. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips swollen from my kisses, her hair a tangle across my pillow. She looked nothing like the perfect, untouchable woman the world might expect at my side. She looked real, human, alive, and that made her irresistible, “You keep thinking so loud I can feel it,” she whispered, brushing her fingers lightly across my chest, I caught her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles, “I can’t turn it off,” “Then tell me,” she said, “What’s haunting you at this hour?” I hesitated, searching her face. She wanted honesty, but what I carried wasn’t something to share lightly. Still, some truths slip free when you’re lying naked beside a woman who feels like both your ruin and your salvation, “There’s a man who wants what’s mine,” I said slowly, “He’s been circling, waiting for weakness. Tonight he moved closer,” Her brows furrowed, “And you’re worried he’ll come after you?” “No,” I admitted, my throat tight, “I’m worried he’ll come after you,” Her lips parted, surprise flashing across her face. Then, instead of fear, something gentler softened her expression. She shifted closer, laying her palm against my cheek, “You think I’m your weakness,” she said quietly, “You are,” I said without hesitation, “But you’re also my strength. And that terrifies me more than anything,” The words hung between us, heavier than any vow I’d ever spoken. She didn’t pull away. She kissed me instead, slow and lingering, as if to tell me she wasn’t afraid of the truth, Still, when she drifted back into sleep, the unease wouldn’t let me rest. Carefully, I slipped from the bed and dressed, the cold air biting my skin. I left her curled beneath the blankets, her eyes following me with quiet fascination, and stepped into the hall, Lucian was waiting, as I knew he would be, “Well?” he asked, “Tell me everything,” I said, my gaze sharp, wolf-like, He spoke quickly, detailing every piece of intel. Marcus had been rallying smaller packs, trying to turn them against me. He had made moves in the city’s underworld, leveraging human connections to weaken my influence. Every word tightened the coil of anticipation in my chest. Marcus wanted me distracted, and he had found the perfect wedge, Sophia, “I don’t underestimate him,” I said finally, pacing the floor, “But he thinks he can manipulate the rules of engagement, make me careless. He thinks he can touch her,”
