THE TRUTH COMES BACK

Chapter Seven: For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak. I just stood there with my phone pressed against my ear, listening to the voice on the other side. A voice I thought my mind had created. A voice I thought belonged only to my memories. “Amara…” My fingers tightened around the phone. “Who is this?” There was a pause. A painful pause. Then the voice answered. “It’s me.” My heart dropped. Because I knew. Even after all these years, I knew. “Mia?” The line became silent. And then I heard a quiet cry. A cry filled with emotions I couldn’t explain. “Yes, Amara.” My knees almost gave out. My sister was alive. The person I spent years missing. The person I cried for. The person I thought left me forever. She was alive. But instead of feeling only happiness, I felt something else. Pain. Confusion. Anger. “Where have you been?” I whispered. My voice broke. “Why did you leave me?” I heard her breathing heavily. “I never wanted to leave you.” “Then why did you?” The question I carried for years finally came out. “I waited for you, Mia.” My tears fell. “I thought you forgot about me.” “No, Amara,” she said quickly. “I remembered you every single day.” That sentence hurt more than anything. Because it meant she loved me. And she still left. “Then tell me the truth,” I said. “I’m tired of secrets.” For a long moment, nobody spoke. Then Mia said, “You need to know what really happened that night.” I closed my eyes. The night. The night everyone refused to talk about. “The person in the picture,” I said. “Yes.” “Who is it?” Her voice became softer. “Someone who wanted to destroy our family.” My heart raced. “Who?” Before she could answer, the call ended. I stared at the phone. Again. Another unanswered question. Another piece missing from my story. But this time, I wasn’t alone. Daniel looked at me carefully. “You spoke to her.” I turned around. He already knew. “How?” He looked guilty. “Because I knew she was going to contact you.” I froze. “You knew?” Zara looked shocked too. “Daniel, what are you talking about?” He sighed. “I should have told you earlier.” My chest felt heavy. “Tell me what?” He looked down. “My mother knew Mia was alive.” Everything went quiet. The person I trusted. The person who helped me find answers. Had been holding one of the biggest secrets from me. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Daniel looked at me. “Because I promised Mia I wouldn’t.” I felt hurt. Not because he kept a secret. But because everyone kept deciding what I could handle. Everyone protected me. But nobody trusted me. That night, I sat alone in my room. I opened my notebook. The same notebook where I had written my fears for years. But this time, I wrote something different. I wrote: “Today I found out my sister is alive. Today I found out my friends knew more than they told me. Today I realized my whole life has been built around a secret.” I looked at the words. And for the first time, I understood something. My thoughts were never my enemy. They were trying to tell me something. They were trying to lead me back to myself. The next morning, I received a message. One sentence. One location. One chance to finally know everything. “Meet me where it all started.” And underneath was the name of the place that changed my life forever. The old archive building.
