THE TRUTH BEHIND MIA'S LETTER

650 Words
Chapter Four: I sat on my bed that night with the envelope in my hands. I had stared at it for almost an hour. I was scared to open it. Not because I didn’t want to know the truth… But because I was afraid the truth would hurt more than the questions. For years, I had created my own answers. Maybe Mia left because she was tired. Maybe she forgot about me. Maybe I wasn’t important enough for her to stay. Those thoughts lived in my head for so long that they became my reality. But now, holding her handwriting in my hands again, I wondered if everything I believed was wrong. I finally opened the letter. “Amara, If you ever find this, please know one thing… I never left because I wanted to.” My eyes filled with tears. I continued reading. “I know you think I abandoned you. I know you think I forgot you. But the truth is, I was trying to protect you.” Protect me? From what? I kept reading. Mia explained that before she disappeared, she discovered something about our family. Something nobody wanted me to know. She found out that the reason our family had always been so secretive was because of something that happened years ago. Something that involved me. My heart started beating faster. Me? I read the next line again and again. “You were too young to remember, Amara. But there was a night that changed everything. A night that made everyone afraid of the truth.” I dropped the letter. My thoughts were everywhere. A night I didn’t remember? A secret about me? I felt like my whole life was a story someone else had written, and I was only now discovering the missing pages. The next day, I found Daniel near the library. I needed answers. “Daniel, where exactly did you find this letter?” He looked surprised by my question. “In the archive room.” “Why were you there?” He hesitated. And that hesitation told me everything. “You know something,” I whispered. He looked away. “Amara…” “No. Please. I need the truth.” For a moment, he was silent. Then he sighed. “My mother used to work at this university.” I waited. “She knew your sister.” My heart froze. “You knew Mia?” “Not personally,” he said quickly. “But my mother did. She told me stories about a girl who was always trying to protect someone she loved.” I looked down. “Me.” Daniel nodded. “She said Mia carried a lot of guilt. She believed something happened because of her.” The words felt heavy. Guilt. Mia had guilt? Why? Before I could ask more, Zara appeared. She looked between us. “What’s going on?” Neither of us answered. Because suddenly, I realized something. My two closest friends on campus were connected to my past. A past I thought nobody knew about. That night, I went back to my room and opened my old notebook again. This time, I searched deeper. Behind the pages, hidden between the covers, I found something I had never noticed before. A photograph. It was old. It was faded. And it showed Mia standing beside someone I recognized. Someone I never expected to see. My own mother. But behind them was another person. A person whose face had been scratched out. And underneath the picture were four words written by Mia: “The truth is coming.” I stared at those words until my eyes became heavy. For the first time, I understood something. My journey was never just about finding myself. It was about discovering why I was lost in the first place. And somewhere between my memories, my friendships, and my fears… the truth was waiting.
