THE MEMORY I LOST

Chapter Six: I stared at the file in my hands until the words stopped making sense. “Amara was the only witness.” Those words followed me everywhere. They followed me back to my room. They followed me into my dreams. They followed me every time I closed my eyes. A witness to what? That question became the only thing I could think about. My entire life, I believed I was just a quiet girl who struggled to express herself. I believed my silence came from my personality. But now I wondered… What if my silence was protecting me from something I couldn’t remember? The next morning, I woke up feeling different. For the first time, I wasn’t running away from my thoughts. I was facing them. I sat in front of my mirror and whispered, “Amara, you deserve the truth.” Even if it hurt. Even if it changed everything. I went to meet my mother again. This time, I refused to leave without answers. When she opened the door and saw me, she already knew why I came. “You found the file,” she said quietly. I nodded. “Why didn’t you tell me?” She looked away. “Because you were just a child.” “I’m not a child anymore.” My voice cracked. “I have spent years feeling like something was wrong with me. I deserve to know what happened.” My mother sat down slowly. For a moment, she looked older than I had ever seen her. Then she finally spoke. “The night everything changed… your sister was trying to protect you.” I held my breath. “She knew something was happening. Something she shouldn’t have discovered.” “What did she discover?” My mother looked at me. “Your father’s secret.” The room became silent. My father. A person I rarely talked about. A person who disappeared from our lives years ago. “What secret?” My mother’s eyes filled with tears. “He was involved in something that put our family in danger.” I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me. All those years, I thought Mia left because she wanted to. But she was protecting me. “She made a promise,” my mother continued. “She promised she would keep you safe.” A memory suddenly flashed in my mind. I was younger. I was hiding behind a door. I saw Mia standing in front of me. She looked scared. She held my hand and whispered, “Amara, no matter what happens, never forget that I love you.” I grabbed my head. The memory was coming back. Slowly. Painfully. And then I remembered something else. A person standing behind Mia. The same person whose face was scratched out in the picture. I opened my eyes. “I know who it is.” My mother looked at me. “Who?” I swallowed. “Someone who was there that night.” When I returned to campus, everything felt different. The same buildings. The same people. The same streets. But I was different. I wasn’t just Amara, the quiet girl anymore. I was Amara, the girl looking for the truth. Zara noticed immediately. “You found something,” she said. I looked at her. “Yes.” Daniel joined us. “What did you find?” I looked at both of them. For the first time, I trusted someone enough to tell my story. “My sister didn’t abandon me.” They stayed quiet. “She was protecting me.” Daniel looked away. And that small reaction caught my attention. “Daniel…” He looked back. “You knew something, didn’t you?” His face changed. And before he could answer, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered. A voice spoke softly. “Amara… you finally remembered.” My heart stopped. Because I knew that voice. It was a voice from my childhood. A voice I thought I would never hear again. The person who had been missing from my life for years… was finally calling me.
