Astonished, Lilith asked, “Just the two of us?”
“Unfortunately yes. The rest of our little rescue party are going to follow the other ships.”
A puzzled expression slipped across Lilith’s face as she looked around at the four men and Kadeya. “Where is Rarus? I saw him when I was tied up at the camp a couple of days ago. He signaled he’d be back to rescue me.”
Azazel’s head dropped and he kicked at small stone. The others exchanged furtive glances.
“Oh no! What happened?” Lilith demanded.
Seeing that Azazel was unable to speak, Kadeya answered, “Dr. Lilith, it must have been just minutes after you saw Rarus that he stumbled into the middle of a firefight. We’d been discovered in our hideout by two sentries. Their weapons were dialed to the kill setting. Rarus gave his life saving ours.”
