Chapter 15 COLFAX Leaving Gwen and his sons always felt like cold wind slicing through his stomach. But as Colfax wove his way through town toward the supply caravan that would carry him onto the Isle of Salire, he tried to quell his conscience. He tried not to picture how Palo’s face would fall and how Nolan would stiffen his shoulders to bear the invisible weight of being the oldest man in the house once again. He tried not to imagine the betrayal Gwen felt or the way other men stared at her. He trusted her—of course he did. He was the scoundrel, not her. Being gone still set him on edge. How many times could his wife bear his absence before she decided he wasn’t worthy of her?
