Prologue II

**** Five years. Half a decade of struggles, of trying to build a life with a man who was incapable of love, of closing her eyes to his flagrant infidelity, of believing in a dream that had shattered into a million pieces – all gone in the blink of an eye. She sighed again, a deep, weary exhalation that seemed to carry the entire weight of her shattered dreams, of a future that had dissolved into nothingness. She didn’t spare her child a second glance, her focus already on the bleak, uncertain future that stretched before them, a future she now had to face alone “Miss Alexandria, please do not forget to feed your child every four hours,” a nurse called out, her voice a gentle reminder of the immediate, tangible responsibilities that now rested solely on Alexandria’s shoulders. 'I’ll call', Mom, she thought with a sigh, the desperate need for comfort, for guidance, for a familiar voice, overwhelming her. The weight of motherhood, coupled with the fresh sting of betrayal, was crushing. “Can I get a telephone and could you help me with the feeding?” Alexandria asked, her voice flat, emotionless, the plea barely audible. The nurse hesitated for a moment, then, understanding the depth of exhaustion and despair in Alexandria’s eyes, nodded with quiet compassion. “Okay, sure.” “Thank you,” Alexandria said halfheartedly, the words barely a whisper. The room fell silent again, save for the soft gurgle of the newborn and the steady beep of medical equipment. Outside, the first sliver of dawn was finally breaking, painting the sky in muted shades of grey and bruised purple. But for Alexandria, the world remained cloaked in a profound, suffocating darkness, a darkness that promised a long, arduous journey ahead. The cold, discerning eyes of her son, Jay, remained fixed on her, a silent witness to the silent, profound sorrow that had just taken root, irrevocably altering the course of their lives.
