* DRAKES POV * 3 days later *
Sitting at my desk I look at the time, it's 7:15 am. Layla usually brings coffee to the office around 7.
I usually miss her coffee rounds on Mondays, but I was pulling an all nighter trying to figure out some contracts. I am the CEO of Darks Constructions, this has been passed down to each firstborn in my family for generations.
Not saying I didn't earn it, I put in my labor and went to college, proving that I can help the company grow and profit. Keeping organized with the business allows the company to plan ahead and have multiple active sites with minimal issues. I sometimes join the steelworkers, they have a dangerous job like many others, and I try not stay in the office too long.
Where is Layla? Ambrose my wolf growled in my head.
Yes, my wolf. I am not only CEO, I am also Beta Drake Dark of the Silver Blood Pack. I am a werewolf, second in command. Alpha Barrett Pine is the big boss. He runs the pack and I help him do it. We also have a Gama Danté who is a position below me.
Usually my Beta work gets done on the weekends and my the company during the week, but recent issues has fussed them together.
I had hosted a meeting with the Alpha and Elders to discuss a rouge problem by our territory. The rouges are werewolves that were cast out, some moved between packs, others turned into animals, and become unpredictable creatures. People have gone missing in the area as the rouge attacks have increased.
There was an attack this weekend, a group split up and we chased them out of the territory. I had moved some projects up in the timeline to make the construction area closer to the attacks, to keep a better eye on the problem.
Standing from my desk I start to walk to the door feeling how my body stiffened finally leaving the chair. I am 6" and bulkier than typical guys, but not in a box way. I wouldn't say im an athlete, but I do like to spar with the guys at home and go for runs.
Making my way down the hall I go on the elevator and push on the number 3.
When the doors open I see the reception desk was empty, not even the computer was turned on.
Employees running around like chickens without any heads.
"Um, Mr. Dark?" A small lady in her mid 30s came up beside me looking nervous as she played with her fingers. "Is there anything I can help you with?"
"What is going on down here?" I asked trying to sound as gentle as I could. She was human and seemed to be very intimidated by me. "Where is Layla?"
"She hasn't come in today. She hasn't called, so Jeffree is trying to find his paperwork and get everyone's schedules out." She looked down at her shoes. "We are already behind today."
"It's only been a few hours of the work day." Walking past the lady who's name has slipped me I go to Jeffree's office.
Without knocking I walk in to find Jeffree at his computer, a mess of papers in front of him and notes all over the wall behind him. Seeing me he stands up.
He has blonde hair and blue eyes, was a jock in High School, but good with numbers so he was head of the financial department. Also a human, I have found humans being the main employees in the finances means the business can run no matter the situation in the Pack.
"What is happening this morning?" i questioned him.
"Well Sir." He begins to pale. "Layla hasn't come in today and hasn't called so I wasn't able to get any information from her and I'm trying to figure out the schedule for everyone. The tasks are about to be handed out."
"How is Layla, a receptionist, cause this much delay in the office? This all sounds like your description."
"Uh... Well, she... She kinda does more than the average receptionist." He stutters and motions to his desk. "She passed out all the paperwork for signing and assignments in the morning. What takes me a few hours to go over and figure out takes her about 30 minutes."
"She is supposed to take calls and emails, relaying the messages as needed. She does have other work to file and keep organized. But she isn't in charge of the schedule."
I start to grip the seam of my slacks, getting irritated that his job was on Layla this whole time, he was offered to hire an assistant years ago but turned the offer down. She deserves a raise if she is also taking the duties from other people.
"Get organized." Turning on my heel I head towards the parking garage underneath the building. I make a mental note to talk to Jeffree later on his duties in the company.
Pulling out my personal phone I turn off the Do Not Disturb setting, I was so busy ever since the meeting on Friday my phone has only been in my pocket.
One missed call was on the screen.
Opening my phone I see the missed call is from Layla.
When did she call? Angus asked. He started to pace in my head, she rarely called. I know she prefers to text or email over calling.
"Saturday, at 2:47am." I said out loud as I exit the elevator. Pushing play on the voicemail message I step into my black Suburban.
"Drake...." Layla's voice cried through the phone. "There are, wolves."
Why are there wolves near Layla! My wolf howled in anger. He was always protective over her.
"What do I do?" She asked, I start to see red as her breathing is picking up, very noticeable even on the phone.
If I wasn't listening so closely to the message I wouldnt have caught her whispering, "Please... I don't understand."
She says nothing for the rest of the clip, I could hear a commotion on her end, and what sounded like gagging. What filled me with rage was when I heard her choke before the line gets cut off.
Get my sister to my private cabin by the packs boarder in 10 minutes! I roar through a mindlink to Gamma Danté.
Ambrose chuckles in my head, We are going hunting.
