Chapter 1

I’m lying here in my room right now. Good thing there are no classes today. I still can't forget what that jerk of a guy did to me. As I was thinking about it, tears started to fall again from my eyes. Suddenly, my phone rang. When I looked, it was my friend calling. I picked it up and answered. "Hello, bestie! I saw your boyfriend and his GBF together at the mall yesterday!" my friend shouted on the other end. It felt like something got stuck in my throat when I heard that. The tears I had been holding back started to fall again. "W-we’re n-not together anymore, Kai," I said in a soft, tearful voice. "What?! That guy’s such an asshole. I knew I couldn't trust the look on his face!" Kai said angrily and annoyed. "Don’t cry anymore, Elle. Come with me later tonight," she said with concern. "I-I don’t want to go to a bar, Kai." "Come on, Elle. You need to forget that jerk. If I see him again, I swear I’ll crush him," she said with fire in her voice, making me smile a little. "I’ll pick you up later, okay?" "Alright," I replied softly. We continued talking for a few more minutes. While I was lost in thought, I heard my aunt knocking on my door. "Elle, come down now. It’s time to eat," I was startled from my thoughts by my aunt’s concerned voice outside my door. "Okay, Auntie. I’m coming," I said quietly. "I’ll wait for you downstairs." I heard her footsteps walking away, so I knew she had left. After she left, I fixed myself up a little so she wouldn’t worry too much before heading downstairs. When I got to the kitchen, I saw Auntie already setting the table. "Come on, let’s eat," she said kindly. I smiled at her to ease her worry. "You haven’t eaten dinner last night. I know you’re hungry." "Sorry, Auntie. I just forgot, and honestly, I wasn’t really hungry last night," I said with a forced smile to stop her from worrying. We sat at the table and started eating. After the meal, Auntie went outside to chat with the neighbors. I cleaned up the dishes and tidied the house a bit to distract myself. After cleaning, I took a bath and cooked lunch for me and Auntie. When I finished, she was in the living room watching a movie. "Auntie, let’s eat," I called out and set the table. I heard her footsteps coming closer, and we sat down to eat. We said a short prayer before starting the meal. "Auntie, Kai and I are going out later," I said, breaking the silence as we ate. "Alright, just be careful and don’t stay out too late." "Yes, Auntie," I replied with a smile. After we ate, Auntie went out to visit the rental house. I went back to my room because I wanted to take a nap. I woke up around 5:20 PM, took a shower, and changed into a red above-the-knee dress. I also put on red lipstick and light makeup and fixed my hair. Even if I’m broken, I need to move on. But honestly, it’s such a waste of time and effort I gave to that guy. "Elle, come down now—Kai’s here!" Auntie shouted from downstairs. "Coming, Auntie!" I quickly went down and saw Kai talking to Auntie outside. I walked over to them. "Auntie, we’re leaving now," I said with a smile. "Alright, take care." "Yes, Auntie." "Don’t stay out too late," she reminded. We just smiled and walked over to Kai’s car. Once we reached the car, we got in and she started the engine. She said we wouldn’t head straight to the bar—we’d grab something to eat first since it was still early. "Have you moved on from what Kian did to you?" Kai asked, breaking the silence. "Um… I’m okay, but I still can’t get what he did out of my head," I said softly. "You’ll move on eventually. There are so many other guys out there!" she said, trying to cheer me up. "I was going to introduce you to my brother, but never mind—he’s a huge flirt!" she added, laughing. She had wanted to introduce me to her brother for a while now, but back then, I was still with Kian. I felt sad again thinking about Kian, but I know someday I’ll move on from him. We arrived at the bar after eating at a nearby eatery we passed along the way. We entered the bar and saw people kissing in the corners, others dancing in the middle. My eyes were wandering until Kai pulled me to the counter and we sat on stools. "What drink do you want, ma’am?" the bartender asked with a smile. "Two tequilas," Kai said. The bartender prepared our drinks and placed them in front of us. Kai handed me one, and we drank at the same time. "This tastes bitter," I commented after my first sip. "You’re just not used to it," Kai said, laughing, and ordered another round.
