Chapter 5: A Dark Discovery

Weeks had passed since the trials, he won and he was rewarded with a golden ribbon that was attached to his clothes by the headmaster. In the evening, while he was walking in the hallway, going back to his dorm, he saw Professor Whitebeans (Professor in making a powerful spell) talking to someone who couldn’t recognize him. He knows that what he’s doing is wrong. However, he can’t just let it flow. He had followed them a dimly lit hallway, thinking that the stern sorcerer was on his way to his chambers for the night. But as he crept closer, he heard the unmistakable sound of voices coming from behind a closed door. Leo's curiosity got the better of him, and he pressed his ear to the keyhole, straining to hear what was being said. At first, all he could hear was a low murmur, the sound of two men talking in hushed tones. Leo held his breath, afraid to make a sound. He knew he was risking punishment if he was caught eavesdropping, but he couldn't resist the temptation to learn more about what was going on behind closed doors. "...forbidden spell," Whitebeans was saying. "It's far too dangerous to even consider." The other voice chuckled darkly. "Ah, but that's precisely what makes it so appealing, isn't it? The power to bring about the end of the world, to reshape it in our own image...think of the possibilities." Leo's heart began to race. He had never heard of such a spell, and the very idea of it made him shiver with fear. What kind of people would even consider using such a thing? And what other secrets was the academy hiding from its students? As the conversation continued, Leo pieced together more details. The forbidden spell was said to be hidden away in a secret chamber deep within the academy's labyrinthine underground tunnels. Whitebeans had been tasked with guarding the chamber, but apparently, someone else was now interested in gaining access to it. Leo's mind raced with questions. Who was the other person Whitebeans was talking to? What did they hope to accomplish by using the spell? And most importantly, how could Leo stop them? "I can't believe what I'm hearing," Leo thought to himself, listening intently from behind the closed door. "Is Professor Whitebeans really considering using a forbidden spell?" "But the risks are too great," Whitebeans argued. "It's not just our lives that are at stake, but the fate of the entire world." "Ah, always so cautious," the unknown voice replied. "Where's your sense of adventure, Whitebeans? Don't you want to push the boundaries of what's possible? Don't you want to leave your mark on history?" Leo's mind was racing. He had always respected Professor Whitebeans, but hearing him talk about using such a dangerous spell filled him with doubt. What if Blackwood was more interested in power and glory than in teaching his students how to use magic responsibly? "But the consequences..." Whitebeans started to say. "The consequences be damned!" the other voice interrupted. "Think of what we could achieve if we harness the power of that spell. We could become gods!" Leo's heart sank. He had always dreamed of becoming a great sorcerer, but he had never imagined that such power could corrupt even the most well-respected magicians. The conversation continued on for a few more minutes, with Whitebeans trying to dissuade the unknown voice from pursuing the forbidden spell. But Leo couldn't focus on the details. His mind was consumed with doubt and fear. Was his beloved professor really considering using a spell that could bring about the end of the world? And if so, what did that mean for Leo and the rest of the students at the academy? He stayed there, listening, until the conversation finally wound down and the two men left the room, their footsteps echoing down the hallway. Leo took a deep breath and stood up, feeling a newfound sense of purpose. He knew what he had to do. Leo spent the next few days poring over old tomes and ancient scrolls, trying to find any mention of the forbidden spell. He worked tirelessly, barely sleeping or eating, driven by a sense of urgency and fear. He knew that time was running out, and that he had to act quickly if he wanted to prevent disaster. Finally, he found what he was looking for. It was a dusty old book, hidden away in a forgotten corner of the library. The pages were yellow and brittle, and the ink was faded, but the words were clear enough: the forbidden spell, also known as the Spell of Unmaking, was said to be capable of unleashing unspeakable destruction upon the world. It was the kind of power that no one should ever wield, no matter how powerful or ambitious it might be. Leo's hands shook as he read the words. He knew he had to tell someone, to warn the other students and faculty about what was going on. But who could he trust? And how could he convince them of the danger that lay ahead? It was then that he remembered something that his old man had said to him before he entered the academy, a piece of advice that had stuck with him ever since. "Sometimes, the greatest magic is in the simple act of speaking the truth," Laury ( the old man ) had said, his voice grave and serious. "Never forget that, Leo. It may save your life someday." With a deep breath, Leo gathered his courage and made his way to the common room, where he found a group of his friends gathered around a table, poring over a stack of books. "Guys," he said, his voice shaking. "I need to talk to you about something. Something important." The Alex looked up, curious. "What is it?" Nathan asked. Leo hesitated, unsure of how to begin. But then he remembered Laury's advice and took a deep breath. "I found a book," he said. "A forbidden book. It contains a spell, the Spell of Unmaking, that could destroy the world if it's ever used. I think someone at this academy is planning to use it." There was a moment of stunned silence as the other students processed what he had just said. Then one of them spoke up. "Are you sure?" Maxrill asked. "I mean, that's a pretty serious accusation. Who would even have access to a spell like that?" "I don't know, " Leo admitted. "But I found the book in the library, so it's someone here. “If that is the case, I think we need to tell someone" Maxrill said. They looked at each other uncertainly. Leo could tell that they were scared, but he also sensed a flicker of determination in their eyes. "Okay," one of them said. "Let's do it. Let's tell someone." “But-…” Leo urged. However, his friends had already walked away. He didn’t have any choice but to follow them. As they made their way to the faculty wing of the academy, Leo couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. He knew that they were walking into danger, that whoever was behind the Spell of Unmaking was not going to give up without a fight. But he also knew that he had to do this. He had to speak the truth, no matter what the consequences might be. When they reached the faculty wing, they were met by Professor Blackwood, who was pacing back and forth in front of his office. His eyes flickered with suspicion as he regarded Leo and his companions. "What's going on?" he demanded. "Professor," Nathan said. " We found a book in the library. It contains a spell, the Spell of Unmaking, that could destroy the world if it's ever used. We think someone at this academy is planning to use it." For a moment, there was silence. Then Blackwood's face twisted into a scowl. "You have no proof," he said. "No evidence. This is a very serious accusation, and I won't have you throwing around wild accusations without any evidence to back them up." Leo and his companions exchanged worried glances. They knew that Blackwood was powerful, and they didn't want to make an enemy of him. But they also knew that they couldn't ignore the danger posed by the Spell of Unmaking. "We understand your skepticism, Professor," said Alex. "But we wouldn't have come to you if we didn't think this was important. We believe that whoever has the book is planning to use the spell, and we need your help to stop them." Blackwood regarded them for a long moment, his eyes narrowing. Finally, he nodded. "Very well," he said. "I'll look into this matter myself. But I need your help. You'll have to gather more information and find out who has the book." Alex felt a surge of relief. He had been afraid that Blackwood would dismiss their concerns out of hand, but it seemed that the professor was taking them seriously. "Thank you, Professor," he said. "We'll do whatever it takes to stop this." Blackwood nodded, but his expression was still guarded. "You do that," he said. "And remember, you're treading on dangerous ground. Be careful who you trust." With that, he turned and disappeared into his office, leaving Leo and his companions to wonder what lay ahead. As they walked away from the faculty wing, Leo couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. From what happened last night and what he heard, he created a doubt for everyone now. And what did he mean about being careful who they trusted? "We have to be careful," said Leo, voicing his thoughts aloud. "We don't know who we can trust." "I don't trust Blackwood," Morgana said with an intense voice that made others look at her. "He's too powerful, too mysterious. And he's always seemed to have his own agenda." Leo nodded in agreement. "Me as well, we’ll have to keep an eye on him," he said. "But right now, we need to focus on finding out who has the book. And we have to be careful not to let anyone know what we're up to." The group spent the next few days gathering information and investigating leads. They spoke to other students, scoured the library for clues, and even sneaked into the faculty wing to search for the book itself. But they found nothing. No one seemed to know anything about the Spell of Unmaking, and the book itself had vanished without a trace. Leo was beginning to feel discouraged. Maybe they had been wrong. Maybe there was no danger after all. But then, one day, Blackwood summoned them to his office. "I have some news," he said, his face grave. "I've been doing some investigating of my own, and I've uncovered some disturbing information. It seems that one of our own students is behind this. They've been planning to use the Spell of Unmaking for their own nefarious purposes." Leo and his companions exchanged horrified glances. "Who?" Leo asked, his voice shaking. "I can't say for certain," Blackwood replied. "But I have my suspicions. And I need your help to stop them." For the next few days, Leo and his friends worked closely with Blackwood, following leads and gathering evidence. They were shocked to discover that one of their fellow students had indeed been planning to use the Spell of Unmaking to destroy the academy and all its inhabitants. As they delved deeper into the investigation, Blackwood gained their trust. He revealed a side of himself that Leo had never seen before - one that was kind, compassionate, and fiercely protective of his students. But as the evidence piled up, Leo couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. It was almost too easy - Blackwood had been the one to bring them the news, after all. And why had he been investigating in the first place? Was it all just a ploy to gain their trust? Leo decided to confront Blackwood about his suspicions. "Professor," he said one day, "I can't help but wonder... why were you investigating this in the first place? It seems like an odd thing for a headmaster to do." Blackwood's expression darkened. "I suppose it does, doesn't it? As a headmaster of this Academy, I must be the one who will do the actions isn’t? But the truth is, Leo, I've always been a bit... paranoid, I suppose you could say. And when I heard about the Spell of Unmaking being used in the real world, well... I couldn't just sit back and do nothing." Leo wasn't sure if he believed Blackwood, but he didn't have time to dwell on it. The first challenge was coming up, and he had to focus on preparing for it.
