Lexi's POV.
My palm stung from the force of the slap, but it dulled in comparison to the shock and confusion rushing through me.
Did I just hear him right? A fake fiancée? Exactly what did he take me for?
Now I was certain that I didn't just have a one night stand with a liar, but a crazy person instead.
Because what kind of person just threw out that sort of proposal to a stranger?
I took advantage of his momentary shock and the relaxation in his grip to put some distance between us.
“Can you even hear yourself right now? You sound like a lunatic! Be your fake fiancée? I don't even know who you are! Why am I even still here?” I asked myself, raising my hands in exasperation.
As I turned to leave, he didn't try to stop me this time, only saying, “You'll be back, Lexi, I'm sure of it. You and I? We're endgame. Just know I'll be waiting for you.”
I decidedly ignored the note of confidence I heard un his words and left the cabin, slamming the door shut behind me for good measure.
Thankfully, my cabin was just a short walk away, and I didn't see anyone on my way there. I entered and locked the door behind me, wondering if such a small lock was going to keep Kade away if he decided to come after me.
Why was my life filled with so much drama?
I hadn't gotten over the mess with my ex, now I woke up in the bed of a handsome stalker who wanted me to pose as his fake fiancée for a year.
And here I was thinking things couldn't get any worse.
I opened the minibar and grabbed a small bottled cocktail, draining half of the bottle's contents in two large gulps. I knew that it was too early to start drinking, but I needed alcohol to process my next course of action.
As I packed up my belongings, I tried not to think about the certainty I heard in Kade's voice as I left his cabin. He seemed so sure that I was going to return to him, and as the minutes passed, I started to see the sense within his words, even though I badly didn't want to.
He was right, if I was being honest with myself. Why was I still hung up on Damon, who clearly wanted nothing to do with me anymore? What exactly was stopping me from accepting Kade's proposal? Sure, he lied to me and manipulated me, but he came clean at the first chance he got.
Was I really thinking of accepting the proposal of a stranger?
I quickly grabbed my phone, went to the internet and typed out “Kade luxury cruise tour”. I didn't expect any tangible results, but judging from the size of his cabin and his noncommital answer to my drunken question the previous night, I had a hunch.
Nothing, however, would have prepared me for the results that stated back at me from my phone screen.
Kade wasn't a nobody. In fact, he was the furthest thing from nobody anyone could even think of.
Turns out the crazy stalker I had pegged Kade to be was nothing like who he actually was. Crazy Kade was actually Kade Yager, Billionaire CEO of the Yager group, which owned the parent company the cruise tour operated under, alongside a host of other businesses. He was a giant in the hospitality and luxury goods sector, hailed as a business wizard by many and crowned as the most eligible bachelor in the city for the past few years in a row.
Exactly who had I slept with?
I browsed through the pictures on the Internet, seeing him photographed at glamorous events with women so perfect, they seemed to have been carved from glass. And I noticed that no woman was seen on his arm twice.
I tossed my phone aside and finished my packing, taking a quick shower before the ship docked. I was to take a flight back home from the final city of the tour, and I wanted to make sure that my flight details were property booked, so I picked up my phone once again, ignoring Kade's perfect smile from the photos that stared back at me from my screen.
The ship finally docked and we all got off, with everyone proceeding to carry on with their various plans. I dragged my suitcase behind me as I moved towards the taxi rank, looking for one that would take me to the airport, but I barely made it a few steps before I felt someone tug on my suitcase from behind.
I turned meet a pair of striking green eyes staring intently into mine. I quickly snapped myself out of his gaze, pulling my face into a frown as I said,
“What do you want from me? I've told you I'm not interested!”
“I'm not here to convince you. I only want to ask you one thing: are you really willing to just let him win? I don't know who he is, and I don't know what he did to you, but do you want to live in his shadow all your life?” He asked, then left me alone in the middle of the busy walkway.
His words struck a chord within me. Sure, this past week, I had entertained thoughts of getting back at Kayla and Damon, but how was I supposed to do that? How was I going to give them back the pain they had given me in hundredfolds?
But now, an opportunity presented itself. A literal billionaire was at my feet, practically begging me to just act out a ruse with him.
Why not accept and twist the circumstances to my advantage?
As the thought took root within me, it began sprout with the speed of light, my mind overcome with thoughts of how to make all of them pay. The need for vengeance awoke within me, like a beast thirsty for the taste of blood.
Kade was right. I was no pushover. Since he was so willing to provide me with an avenue to carry out my revenge, I was all too willing to accept it with open arms.
I had no qualms about borrowing his power and status to carry out my revenge, after all, hadn't he lied and schemed to get to me first?
I looked around the busy road, spying his tall frame a few metres away from me. I jogged the short distance that separated us, stopping a few feet away from him.
“I'll do it.” I said, letting no trace of my inner thoughts reflect in my voice.
His face broke out in a smile, right before he replied, “I knew you'd come around.”
Before I knew it, he was on one knee in front of me, holding out a small black box which he opened to reveal a huge, teardrop shaped diamond ring inside.
The look of shock on my face was as real as one could imagine.
“What are you doing?” I asked, trying not to freak out at the crowd that was beginning to gather around us.
“Gotta make it authentic, don't you think?” He answered with a wink, before asking loud enough for everyone to hear, “Marry me, Lexi, and make my life complete.”
Quickly reminding myself that I was only playing a role, I faked a ton of enthusiasm and nodded, watching as he slid the diamond and platinum ring onto my finger.
As the weight of the cold metal settled onto my skin, I took a silent vow in my heart, marking all the people who contributed to my sorrow.
I was going to make them pay, one at a time.
