CHAPTER EIGHT

“Where are you going, Jade?” “I’m going to work, Dad.” “You were attacked less than three days ago, and you’re already going back?” “Dad, I’m completely fine. See?” I spun around dramatically, making both my parents stare at me in disbelief. “I can work now. Besides, I need to check on my new assistant.” Dad folded his arms. “That reminds me. Amelia said you refused to choose one of the company employees as your assistant.” “Yes, because I wanted to choose someone myself. Someone I actually like. And I already found him.” I grabbed a slice of bread with one hand while reaching for my phone and car keys with the other. “And don’t worry about his educational background. He has a doctorate too, just like me.” I kissed Dad on the cheek before hugging Mom. “Bye, guys.” I drove straight to the company. Employees greeted me the entire way to my office, and honestly, it was already exhausting. As I passed Amelia’s office, I noticed it was empty. “Where is she?” I asked one of her secretaries. “She went to an early meeting.” I nodded and continued to my office. No one had informed me that my new assistant had arrived. On his very first day, he was already late. Annoyed, I called Grace. “What’s up, sweetie?” she answered cheerfully. “Where are you?” I asked. “I just escaped from a meeting. I’m hiding in the bathroom.” She burst into laughter. “I knew it. Anyway, where’s your friend? He still hasn’t reported for work.” “Which friend?” she asked innocently. “Seriously, Grace? The one you recommended to me.” “Oh, Seith…” “Yeah, whatever his name is. He’s not here yet.” “Oh right, I forgot to tell you. He wasn’t in the city. His flight should land in…” There was a brief pause. “…about ten minutes. Seith is actually a punctual person. His flight just got delayed.” “I’m hanging up.” “Wait, let’s talk more.” “Go back to your meeting, Grace.” “I will. By the way, are you feeling better now?” “Yes, yes, I’m fine. Now go.” She groaned dramatically before hanging up. I already knew office life wasn’t meant for Grace. She hated being tied down in one place. She only agreed to work because of her parents. An hour passed, and there was still no sign of Seith. I was getting irritated. To distract myself, I started watching a drama on my laptop until a knock interrupted me. “Come in.” One of Amelia’s secretaries stepped inside. “What is it?” I asked, pausing the drama. “There’s someone here to report for work. He claims to be your new assistant.” “Send him in.” “Okay.” Finally. The arrogant man had arrived. I resumed my drama while waiting, then another knock came. “Come in.” The moment he stepped into my office, I nearly forgot how to breathe. He was ridiculously handsome. His black hair faded into silver at the top, giving him a dangerous but elegant look. His dark eyes were sharp and unreadable, and his body was broad and well-built beneath his perfectly fitted clothes. He was tall—easily over six feet—and carried himself with an intimidating confidence. His face alone looked sculpted to perfection. His girlfriend must be incredibly lucky. The thought slipped into my mind before I could stop it. And honestly? He was a thousand times better-looking than Louis. The only problem was his expression. He wore such a cold, serious face that it almost ruined the beauty of it. Almost. Even his fashion sense matched my energy perfectly. It was hard not to stare. What a waste for someone this attractive to end up as an assistant. “Sit down.” He sat across from me and crossed his legs casually, as if he owned the office. The nerve. I cleared my throat, trying—and failing—not to stare at him. He was dangerously attractive. “Have you reported to HR yet?” “Hm.” I blinked. Hm? I forced myself to stay calm. “Go to the secretary who escorted you here. She’ll explain your duties.” “Okay.” Short answers again. I was already getting annoyed. “Can you stop replying like that? It’s irritating.” “Hm.” I stared at him in disbelief while he remained completely expressionless. Suppressing my frustration, I handed him a file. “After meeting the secretary, contact the people in this file and schedule them for interviews tomorrow.” “Hm.” Then he stood up and walked out without another word. I leaned back in my chair, feeling strangely offended. It was like I was forcing every conversation out of him. Still… I’d just have to tolerate him.
