At last he comes striding in, his uniform impeccable, and his posture manly and reassuring. As soon as Sukey sees him she darts forward and takes hold of his hand. She’s glad to see someone she knows in this vast and strangely empty building. “Cap’n, Cap’n,” she sings as she does a little bee dance in front of him. He chuckles at her welcome, picks her up and swings her around until she begs to be put down again. Kate and Clara have moved forward to greet him as soon as he is free. Both hold out their hands.
