8 Singles Night We all overslept today, even Sukey who is usually up with the lark. I’m up late because I didn’t sleep well. I tossed and turned puzzling over the Captain’s mysterious change of attitude towards my clothes and makeup. It doesn’t make sense to me. I hate that I appear to have offended his sense of propriety. I can’t talk to Kate about it. I’m too ashamed, but I’m not sure of what. That I have been looking like a tart? Or that the Captain pulled me up on it? I’m bewildered by it all, but life goes on. It’s my turn to attend to Sukey this morning, and so I have to get dressed. When the steward brings our breakfast in, he stops in the doorway to pick up an envelope.
