Unexpected News
I didn’t hear Kate come in last night. I waited up for a while to talk to her, but in the end I was too worn out with all the day’s drama, and so I went to bed early.
I’m sitting up in bed now, quietly drinking my morning tea, and waiting for her to wake up. I’m trying to decide how to tell her about Kempton and the danger he poses. Whatever I say, it’s going to be a shock. I know she doesn’t have an inkling about any of it.
She’s stirring. She sits up with a jolt and looks over at me, sensing me watching her.
“Is there something wrong?” she asks.
My body language must be sending out signals of stress and tension. Only half-awake as she is, she has picked up on it.
“No, nothing’s wrong, but I do want to talk to you as soon as you have woken up properly.”
