Blood and silver

785 Words
The walls of the Crimson Court shook with the thunder of battle. Aurora had never heard such chaos before — steel clashing, snarls echoing, vampires shrieking as flames of resistance flickered in the torchlit halls. Her chains rattled as she pressed herself against the cold stone, straining to see what was happening through the bars of her chamber. Then she saw him. Kael. The werewolf tore through the gates like a storm given flesh. His claws glinted like silver in the torchlight, tearing apart guards who tried to block his path. His golden eyes burned with a fury that needed no words. Aurora’s heart jolted, but not from recognition — she didn’t even know him. To her, he was just another monster breaking into her prison. Still, there was something in his movements. Precise. Relentless. Purposeful. Vampires scrambled in all directions, but the Court was prepared for intruders. More poured in, dozens of them, circling Kael in waves. They struck from every angle, fangs bared, swords flashing. Kael met them head-on. One lunged for his throat, but Kael twisted, catching the vampire’s arm, and sank his teeth into the pale flesh. The vampire screamed — a shrill, unearthly sound — as Kael’s bite burned like poison through his veins. He crumpled instantly, black veins spiderwebbing across his body before he turned limp. Aurora gasped. She knew the truth of what she had just witnessed. A werewolf’s bite. Fatal. To see it up close, to see the strength in this lone wolf taking down warriors of Dracula’s Court, was something no human should ever see and live to tell. But Kael wasn’t unscathed. His chest heaved with the effort of the fight. Claw marks slashed across his shoulder. His blood mixed with theirs on the marble floor, staining the throne room crimson. Aurora knew she couldn’t wait for whatever this stranger intended. Whether he was there for her or not, she couldn’t risk being chained while monsters fought around her. Her chains. The iron cuffs bit into her skin. But the distraction was perfect. She grabbed a jagged shard of silver that had fallen from one of the guards’ broken spears, and with trembling determination, jammed it against the lock. Sparks flew. The metal groaned. She pressed harder until — Click. The lock snapped. Her hands shook as she pulled free. For the first time in weeks, Aurora felt the weight lift from her wrists. She staggered to her feet, every instinct screaming at her to run. On the battlefield below, Kael had already dropped three more vampires. Their bodies twitched, black veins spreading across their skin as the venom of his bite consumed them. His eyes never once glanced at Aurora. To him, she was not the focus. The fight was. And then Lucien stepped forward. Tall. Immaculate. Unharmed. His blade dripped with the blood of another intruder that Kael had brought down in the chaos. He moved like a shadow slipping into the light — calm, unhurried, but lethal in every step. The crowd of vampires parted, forming a circle. Their lord’s champion was about to duel the invader. Kael’s lips curled back in a snarl. Lucien tilted his head, eyes like frozen steel. “A lone wolf… daring to tread in Dracula’s house. Bold. But also foolish.” Kael said nothing, only crouched lower, claws spread wide, the growl in his chest vibrating like thunder before a storm. Aurora’s breath caught. For a heartbeat, time froze. She had no idea why the werewolf was here, why he fought as if the fate of the world was on his shoulders. But she didn’t wait to find out. She darted toward the shadows of the hall, clutching the shard of silver, her bare feet barely making a sound on the stone. Behind her, the throne room erupted again. Kael lunged. Lucien met him blade-first, steel clashing against claw, sparks exploding into the night. The duel had begun. And though Aurora fled deeper into the labyrinth of the Court, her pulse hammering with fear and freedom, the image burned itself into her mind — the lone wolf and the vampire champion, face-to-face in the center of a ring of enemies. The scent of blood thickened in the air. The clash of fangs, steel, and fury shook the chamber. And as Aurora slipped into the shadows, the last thing she saw before turning the corner was Kael, surrounded by a sea of vampires, his golden eyes locked on Lucien’s icy stare, both ready to kill. More vampires closed in, tightening the circle around Kael. Lucien raised his sword, pointing it at the werewolf’s heart. The Court held its breath. The wolf and the blade. Face to face.
