Maddie jumped as the door opened, and Vickie entered.
“Where did you go, baby?” Maddie asked. “I was worried sick. I tried calling, only to realize you didn’t take your phone with you.”
Vickie kept quiet. her shoulders slumped as she leaned against the door. There were tears in her eyes.
“Oh, you poor thing.” Maddie got up immediately and led her friend toward the sofa. “Come sit, come sit. What happened? What did you do?”
Vickie swiped angrily at the tear rolling down her cheek. “I went to that bastard’s house, and he… he threatened me!”
“I’m sorry, Vickie. But I could’ve told you that. Gio isn’t the type to cave to anything.”
“He’s a madman. That’s what he is.”
Maddie gathered her friend’s hands in both of hers. “I’m sorry you had to face his madness. Did he say anything else?”
