Maddie leaned over. “Hello, sir.”
“Get out ter my face.”
She promptly jumped back. “Oops.”
Vickie gave an apologetic smile she tried to mask her embarrassment with. “Sorry. He can be grouchy sometimes.”
“Understandable if he has been in the hospital for so long. He should be up for discharge soon, shouldn't he?”
“Yes,” Vickie replied, steering Maddie out the door. “Bye, Dad.”
Outside the hospital, the evening air was cool, and they got popcorn from a vendor and munched as they strolled.
“This event I was given an invite to,” began Vickie, “what's it all about?”
Maddie bunched up a fistful of popcorn and threw one into her mouth. “I swear, if you grill me from now till tomorrow, I wouldn't know.”
Vickie raised an eyebrow that said she didn't believe her. “Really?” she drawled.
