A NAME FROM THE ASHES

830 Words
The warmth of Kaelen's cottage was a blanket against the lingering chill of the night. It smelled of wood smoke, baked bread, and the rich earth of the fields, a hundred times cozier than the vast, echoing halls of the palace. Elara sat by the hearth, wrapped in a coarse but clean blanket, a mug of warm milk in her hands. Kaelen's mother, a woman named Mara, sat across from her, her face a mixture of kindness and sharp-eyed curiosity. Kaelen stood nearby, leaning against the doorframe, his quiet presence a steady anchor in the room. "You said your name was...?" Mara began, her voice soft but direct. Elara's mind, still reeling from the wolf and the cold, scrambled for an answer. She couldn't give her real name. It was too well-known, too tied to the kingdom she had fled. "I... I'm Anya," she said, the name coming from a story she had once read. "Anya of the Hills." Mara's eyebrows rose slightly. "Anya of the Hills," she repeated slowly. "And what business did a girl from the hills have so close to the border, Anya? It’s not a safe place for a girl alone." The questions came in a gentle but relentless stream. Kaelen's younger brother and sister, drawn by the commotion, peered from a doorway, their eyes wide with fascination. Elara felt like she was on trial, and she had to choose her words carefully. "I... I was traveling with my family," she lied, her voice gaining a little more confidence with each word. "A caravan of merchants. We got separated during a storm. The horses panicked. I've been trying to find my way back ever since." Kaelen's father, a man with a weathered, honest face, emerged from a back room. "Separated?" he asked, his voice rough but not unkind. "From your whole family?" "Yes," Elara said, her gaze dropping to her mug. "I... I believe I am the only one who made it." She let a touch of sadness enter her voice, a truth born from her own separation, if not the way she had described it. Mara's face softened completely. "Oh, my dear child," she said, reaching over to pat Elara's hand. "How terrible for you." She looked at Kaelen, her gaze a silent question. "She can stay here, Mama," Kaelen said before his mother could speak. "She's hurt, and she has nowhere to go." "Of course," Mara said, her decision made. "We will not turn away someone in need. You are welcome to stay with us, Anya. There's always work to be done on the farm, and an extra pair of hands is a blessing." Elara felt a wave of profound relief wash over her. She had a place. A new name, a new identity, and a new life. As she looked around the humble home and into the kind faces of the family, she knew she had found something she had never truly had in the palace: a genuine, honest welcome. Meanwhile, back in the city of Aethel... The palace had become a hive of frantic, silent activity. The king's fury had been contained, but the fear was palpable. The city had been searched discreetly, the royal guards disguised as normal city watchmen, but there was no sign of the princess. "She has crossed the border," the royal advisor, his hawk-like face a mask of cold certainty, announced to King Theron. "The border patrol reported a single rider, a shadow in the night, moving towards the other kingdom. They did not pursue, as per your standing orders." King Theron slammed his fist on the arm of his throne. "Foolish girl! What could she possibly want there? This is a disaster. If the other kingdom thinks we are invading, it will be a war. If Eldoria finds out my daughter is missing and that the betrothal is a farce, they will withdraw their alliance and leave us exposed." "They will not find out, Your Majesty," the advisor said calmly. "Not if we are careful. The royal search has been a failure. But I have a solution. You must send our most trusted man. Our Shadow." The king’s eyes widened slightly. The "Shadow" was a legendary figure, a man whose identity was known to only a handful of people in the kingdom. He was a master of disguise, a tracker, and an assassin—a last resort for the most delicate and dangerous missions. He could slip into any kingdom undetected and retrieve a target without a trace. "Find him," the king commanded, his voice barely a whisper. "Tell him to go to the other side. To blend in. To find my daughter, and to bring her back without a single soul knowing he was ever there. And tell him that if he fails, it will be his last mission." The advisor bowed, a thin smile playing on his lips. "It shall be done, Your Majesty. Our Shadow will cross the wall. He will find her."
